Admiral single hop IPA

Post by gobuchul » Tue Apr 14, 2020 8:45 am

Using up more of my hop stocks and I have a load of Admiral.

I bought it cheap in bulk.

Now I have used it in the past as a bittering hop but never as a late addition.

It's 12% AA.

I was thinking of trying something like this:

5.00 kg Pale Malt, Maris Otter (5.9 EBC) Grain 1 87.0 %
0.50 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt - 30L (59.1 EBC) Grain 2 8.7 %
0.25 kg Cara-Pils/Dextrine (3.9 EBC) Grain 3 4.3 %
15.00 g Admiral [12.00 %] - Boil 60.0 min Hop 4 17.5 IBUs
15.00 g Admiral [12.00 %] - Boil 15.0 min Hop 5 8.7 IBUs
10.00 g Admiral [12.00 %] - Boil 10.0 min Hop 6 4.2 IBUs
50.00 g Admiral [12.00 %] - Boil 5.0 min Hop 7 11.7 IBUs
20.00 g Admiral [12.00 %] - Steep/Whirlpool 0.0 min Hop 8 0.0 IBUs

Anyone done similar?

Will it be very harsh with only Admiral?

Why should it be harsh? Admiral is a pretty "soft" hop in general - and personally I'd knock down the crystal a bit partily because it can be fairly subtle as a flavour hop, it's a fairly gentle oranginess that actually can work quite well in lager. And also I personally just don't much care for beers with lots of crystal. ;-)

Fair point, just wanted a bit of colour. I'll drop the crystal to 5% and put a tiny amount of chocolate in.

Well in the end, I dropped the crystal to 3% and no chocolate.

It's been the corny for 2 weeks now and pretty happy with it.

Not an outstanding beer but a very drinkable IPA.

I have got loads of Admiral so may churn out a few more lockdown batches.

I love Admiral in an ESB type ale. It reminds me of bitter orange marmalade on toast
