Crushing malt without a mill
Crushing malt without a mill
Hi all,
I bought some second hand cornies this week and the seller gave me about 50kg of various malts as he is no longer doing any brewing, all the malts are whole though
Does anyone have a method of crushing that doesn’t involve buying a malt mill? I think my wife will murder me if I spend any more money but I understand I might have no choice.
I do have an electric ‘mincer’ as part of my stand mixer.
Does anyone have experience of this or do I just risk my health and buy a mill?
Thank you for any advice anyone might be able to offer.
I have done a quick search on this board and couldn’t find any references other than mill use

If the seller only had whole malt, then he must have had a mill. Perhaps you could borrow the mill?

Sadly no, he said when I collected he’d got rid of his mill. That was my first thought when he gave me the grains

You need a mill really. What town do you live in/near, a local brewer may be able to help out when restrictions ease?
Re: Crushing malt without a mill
A 'mill' and a 'mincer' are two very different things. A basic manual flour mill is probably cheaper than replacing your mincer and it'll do an ok job too. Probably cost you a lot less than 50kg grains It looks something like this:
Try eBay.
Edit: There you go. Thought I'd check I wasn't typing shite.

Thank you for your advice, looks like I will have to slip a mill purchase under the watchful gaze of SWMBO
I live in Rochdale and we don’t have a HB shop in the town.

When one of these arrived (£12 from ebay) it wouldn't even rotate as there was metal sticking out from the casting. Cheeky s*d suggested a fiver off and I could find a garage to angle grind it off. Stuff that - told him it was ready to be collected as I wasn't near a post office and so I got it for free and filed off the tag myself. It would spoil my brew day to mill 5Kg in one of these. I only ever used it for a few 100g of uncrushed rye in some brews.
You'll probably want to wear down the surface before use unless your recipe includes electo-plated tin (or maybe it was just grey paint on the grinding surfaces).
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

Bit the bullet and bought this
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Manual-Grain ... %7Ciid%3A1
Didn’t realise I had £20 in nectar vouchers so it was £46
Happy days

Have you linked to the right ebay ad? It's showing as £89.99. Plus it's from China and won't be with you until late May or June.

probably managed to copy the wrong link. Was looking at a few.
It’s the type I’m buying though
Hopefully it won’t be that long

Actually that's exactly why I kept mine, to deal with rye an other surprisingly tough grains or small grains. Mine's a reasonable Italian job, but it too needed some abuse before it started working properly. Handy bit of kit. I remember putting 5kg through it toovacant wrote: ↑Sat May 09, 2020 10:13 amWhen one of these arrived (£12 from ebay) it wouldn't even rotate as there was metal sticking out from the casting. "Remember" as in fondly or as in "that's thirty minutes of my life I'll never get back"?
