Red x lager?
Red x lager?
Im looking to make a red lager. The obvious choice would be to use the red x base malt as it can be used at 100% malt bill. im not sure what this will be like for a lager base?

I am currently sipping on a Red X single hop IPA and I think it is a great malt. I will be buying a 25kg sack soon.
Lovely, balanced and malty presence and would be nice as a lager. It would be great to know how you get on.

I have read it can be very malty. I was thinking about adding some flaked rice to it to maybe thin it a little.

You are on the right lines. Keep reducing the taste until it's like most commercial lagers then highly carbonate it and chill it until it tastes like fizzy water

Yes I would go 20 to 25 IBU. My best guess is that it will turn out similar to a Nuremberg Rotbier, which is no bad thing.Juffer wrote:Thank you for your thoughts. I am sure you are sorted already with this, but you need to stick near to the recommended 12 Plato (1.048) wort to get the best red hue. Mine came in at 1.052 and it was still very red, but they recommend balancing with some pilsner malt if you go heavier than that. Conversely you may need a pinch of Carafa Spezial or similar if you are aiming for less than 1.048 .

Nonsense, lots of superb commercial lagers out there. Granted there are some key offenders but for every 'Bud' you have an 'Augustiner Helles".
As for Red X, I have used this for both an APA and a kinda hybrid 25 IBU lager. It is very malty and dominated the flavour, if I recall correctly you need to aim for around 1.048 to get the nice red tinge.
