Has anybody seen this before?
I tipped the first one away, the 2nd is much better with a different batch of DME.

Yes and most of the foam was white as normal.
Very odd. The flask was cleaned twice and dunked in starsan.

Re: Grey Foam In Starter
A wild guess. Yeast acidifies wort. So has the acidity of what has come into contact with the tin foil caused a chemical reaction and led to the discolouration?

No, it was already in the flask unfortunately while it was simmering on the hob.

I assume the tinfoil was on the top of the starter, therefore meaning the substance can't be heavy.
I'd guess some dirt / dust either in the dme or blown into the wort at some point. Either that or you put your fag out in it and forgot.
