Clearing for corny..

Post by Elsie Pop » Sat Jan 23, 2021 1:23 pm

Hello,

Can I use a Better Bottle demijohn to clear before transferring to corny? The question is really - I'm concerned about the space between the beer and the airlock. If say it were half full - would there be too much of a risk of oxidation?

The other possibility for me is to completely fill my second corny and use that as a clearing tank, so there would be very little contact with air and I could purge out any air using CO2.

What are you fermenting in?

If you have BetterBottle racking adapters you can purge air from a sanitised carboy using CO2 from primary fermentation. Just use tubing to connect to the open racking adapter on the sanitised carboy fitted with an airlock. It works fine for half batches.

Thanks for the replies.

I can either ferment in the Better Bottle or I've got a standard Youngs fermentation bucket.

If I ferment in the latter I could clear in the Better Bottle....The latter has no tap, just a plastic demijohn.
