What's everyone's next brew ?

Post by Andy » Thu Jan 05, 2006 10:55 am

Well chaps, what brew do you all have planned next ? I need to get my
@rse in gear and stop building equipment and actually brew!
Looking to do either a Landlord clone from the Wheeler/Protz book or
"Caroline's Fine Ale" from the other Wheeler book. Both are simple recipes
using just pale malt and at most two hop varieties.

What plan ye ?

I'm waiting for a batch to finish fermenting at the moment (a fairly bog-standard bitter), then I'll probably have a go at the mild as well.

I need to order some roast barley, though, as I generally don't use it and haven't got any in stock.

So is the chiller finished, Andy?

This weekend should see some developments - getting a mate to come round to do hosepipe straightening duties. I drilled out the copper reducer fittings last night so we're all ready to rock!

I've got a batch of my porter in the secondary - it's been ignored over the hols but sitting in our house at 10C having a long think. When I racked, it was at 1020, which I thought was a bit high compared with the first batch, so it might have had some room to go. When I put this one in the festival, the judge said he thought it drank thin for its gravity (I didn't). But in case it did, I raised the mash temp a few degrees this time, which might account for the higher racking gravity. I saved a bottle of the last batch and will compare.

My next project, I think, will be to do my blonde as I did it the last time and do a split batch fermentation, half with US-56 and half with S-04, probably next weekend. I'm curious to see the differences in flavour and also how fast it drops bright. I'm getting to the bottom of the last barrel of this one and it's beautiful and bright but it took a long time to get there.

Jim - that Caroline's sounds a bit like my blonde. I put in a small amount of wheat malt (this time I think it was 1.5% of the total bill) for head retention.

JY, have you got any finished beer made with your own hops yet? If so, how does it taste?

dab, all my recipe is for 50 l :bonk

I've check it today: 1008 and it's a very pleasent aroma, easy to drink  with a bitter after taste. :beer

all the hop of that recipe is mine, I think my perle could be at 8%.
I've made another one with my columbus hop but the last hop was the fuggle I bought in GB; this one has a better aroma (probably the saaz ) <_<

I mesured the PH at 5.60 it a bit more that I thought. anyway it looks really good and willn't stay longer in my cellar

;)

I'm thinking of making a "Timothy Taylor Landlord" clone as my first AG brew. Like andy I am spending more time getting my equipment together. Finished the wort chiller, got the boiler, thinking about the mash tun....

I've got some John Bull amber extract and first gold hops, so I'm thinking of throwing something together in a full volume extract boil, so that I can test out my boiler and chiller. B)
