An entertaining 30 minutes, and plenty of tips for the home brewer ( ). Well ... it sort of emphasises what's important.

One of the last remaining four brew pubs in the UK during the 1970s. Odd, I thought the "John Thompson" near my home (Derby) was one of them? Perhaps the corner had been turned with that addition? Anyway, always passed that one by for the pubs in Ticknall (gwor, they've got a bit posh meantime!).

And if you ever want a tune on a 19th C. sounding church organ, it's got that too (and a musician ... when he's not being the landlord).

I'll make it my mission to visit it along with two others of "the four" (in Shropshire, so not far for me to walk). Fortunately, I've ticked the Cornish one (when it was one of the remaining four) so I won't have to trek that far or tolerate another Spingo (with a "p"!) induced headache!

Not such a wild target:

Three of them (including the Old Swan) are in the same locality ...

All Nations, Madeley (Telford) and the Three Tuns, Bishop’s Castle, both Shropshire; and the Old Swan, Netherton, Dudley, West Midlands. All within 85 miles of home, all heading in the same direction.

Not the Blue Anchor, Helston (Cornwall!), but I've been there. The All Nations I'd never heard of before this.

Up until the pandemic I used to be a regular in Ma Pardoes and have spent a bit of time in the Bull and Bladder also. Ma Pardoes is full of character, brewing a selection of beers. Netherton pale ale was my favourite. Bathams bitter has always been a very popular beer around the area, for it’s original gravity (1044 I think?) It’s very deceptive but a beautiful drink.
I’ve had a go at brewing Bathams bitter following Graham Wheeler’s recipe in BYOBRA a few times, nice brew but I think I need to scavenge some yeast from the brewery to get it something like.

Add the great western in wolverhampton, then train down to birmingham centre for the post office vaults,wellington and the old contemptibles and youll have a fun day out with the bonus of a decent pint at every stop.

As though they were making some ‘pharmaceutical-grade’ elixir meant to be stored in orbit for 1000 years. It’s only beer at the end of the day, right? That’s all it is, beer.
