Smallest workable mash.

Post by Reg » Sat Apr 29, 2006 12:26 pm

I was thinking of exprimenting with some demijohn batches.

Can mashes work on such a small scale or are the quantities and temperature variables just to much for predictable results?

I did a test mash with about a pint of goods not so long ago. I put the lot in a large thermos flask, and it worked fine. I didn't go on to ferment the result, though, I just wanted to check that the mash went OK.

I guess I could sieve off the mash into a sterile brewbin, the sparge, the back from the brewbin into the clean pan for the boil.

Mmm... I wonder how many litres it can hold.

What's a safe fill level for boiling on the stove 75%???

I have a bolier but not all the parts and it was bust anyway. I seem to remember it being 6 gallons to allow for good room at the top. I can't seem to find mt grain bag. (A scrabble aroung the shed this morning might have to be repeated).

...and it would appear that the pharmacy in St Albans sells brewing supplies including grains. B*gger! I need a quick no-nonsense recipe...

By the time I ended up cleaning out the shed in a futile attempt to find all the components for my boiler, the shop had shut.

At least I've sound some of my boiler, no tap or element so far, and the shed is now very tidy.

Time to hit the attic to continue the hunt!

Right! I've run out of energy now, but some progress has been made.

So If I can't find the element and tap for my bin, where can I get replacements?
