Slightly dodgy Lager

Post by gonad » Thu Nov 29, 2007 1:23 pm

Made some Grolsch from the D.Line, Brew like what you buy book and I have the following issues!

1. Lager very flat, I did prime the bottles but obviously not enough?

2. Sediment in bottom of bottles means they don't travel well and I couldn't pour the whole bottle out or it all went cloudy, really annoying.

Any help would be great as I would love to brew some more lager or ale to go into my army of bottles but I can't be bothered with another dodgy batch.

Is there any way to carbonate the lager in the bottles before I put the cap on? 8-[

I don't bottle any more, although I will be doing a few bottles in the future.

What I will do is to put the bright beer in my Cornii, and then force carbonate it, before hooking it up to a flow control tap from Norm, with a piece of 3/16 line attached, and then bottle from the tap.

If you keep the bottles Ice cold (Shove them in the Freezer), and also chill the beer heavily then the CO2 loss is minimal.

Clear beer in the bottle.

It is very difficult to get clear beer in a bottle with natural carbonation, but if you use a secondary, then rack to a bottling bucket with the sugar added. then bottle you really should end up with clear beer in the bottle and a paint thin layer of yeast in the bottle. If the yeast layer is thicker than this then you are bottling too early.

Not a Norm tap but same principal. Both Norms taps can be found here

The benefit of the continental tap (You need another benefit its Shiny!) is that a 3/8JG fitting fits on it, then a 3/8 to 6/16 Stem adapter and 3/16 beer line to the bottom of the bottle. Minimal Fobbage! I'll hook it up in a mo and take a pic

Whilst I totally agree with you observations about disturbing the yeast sedimented out. If they are not carbonated enough I have heard of people sprinking in a couple of yeast granules and a tad more sugar and resealing not really done this myself.

Regarding pre-carbonation I am experimenting at the moment with preconditioning in primed 2litre PET's then suphoning from there into bottles. Not given up totally yet but the first two experiments weren't exactly floreless.

Thanks for all the advice the Widget World So-Dash kit sounds good but it's quite pricey.

What about a soda stream?

OK sod it, I'm going to get a Cornii so I can control the fizz and spend even more money, it'll pay for itself in the long run. (that's what I tell my wife)
Any pitfalls to watch for. What should my ideal shopping list consist of?
