I'm not going to keep adding categories, though (it gets impractical, divisive, expensive, etc), and bear in mind that even a custom category could still be collapsed to be judged alongside something else.
Seems very logical - was thining of the ones in that style last time / at IPA comp etc. and also how to figure out attractor/divider question... though that might be a chicken/egg question (e.g. are people more likely to enter a cascadian if it's going to be compared to others than if it's in the "other" category). Cascadian seems to be the one with the off-the-shelf style guide and logical category (10.D) for collapsing.

So - if cascadian doesn't get its own category do you need to enter a set of style guides to be judged against if you are legitimately going into 23, e.g. like those linked to above?

You should explain the style and/or your intent in 23. This is made plain in the guidelines for 23:
THE BREWER MUST SPECIFY THE “EXPERIMENTAL NATURE” OF THE BEER (E.G., TYPE OF SPECIAL INGREDIENTS USED, PROCESS UTILIZED OR HISTORICAL STYLE BEING BREWED), OR WHY THE BEER DOESN’T FIT AN ESTABLISHED STYLE. For historical styles or unusual ingredients/techniques that may not be known to all beer judges, the brewer should provide descriptions of the styles, ingredients and/or techniques as an aid to the judges.
- from the guidelines http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style23.php

CDA/BIPA should be pretty clear to a judge, but if in doubt they should ask the judge director, who if needed should be able to look up the original entry form (complete with recipe if the brewer has bothered to provide it). Don't link to non-BJCP style guides and expect that it will be pulled off the web. Don't do anything to make your entry obviously non-anonymous (like giving your blog address) either.

And I might also refer you here

Steve's already been here, but there's some useful comments and "new styles" defined.

Hi ALi,

Could you point me (and others) to the style guideline for 30A New Zealand Pale Ale (Custom Style) - I know it was defined but can't find it linked from NHC site or here on JBK...
