There is 'Shimla Spice' too, we use them at work for catering in the brewery.

Well, even that's rare, but people seem to love the flavor. However, as soon as you tell 'em the low alcohol content, they sneer. You read the story about how Stone (think Arrogant Bastard, Sublimely Self-Righteous IPA, etc) won a big taste test with their Stone Lee's Mild, yet as far as I know they never brewed it again! American brewers seem to have a hard time overcoming the stigmas attached to session ales.barney wrote:Gooooooo Seymour!

On the other hand, there's evidence that trend is changing. Civil Life can't keep their mild on tap. We just drink it too fast. They use the Fuller's strain, which is notoriously difficult for small-scale commercial brewers (ironically, for many of the same reasons we homebrewers like it, it takes awhile to finish, and drops like a stone, and sticks like cement, making it almost impossible to collect and repitch in subsequent batches using standard equipment, even if you could accurately predict when to schedule the next one...) The bottom line seems to be: tasty true-to-style English ale isn't easy and economical to make, must be well-kept and sold-through fairly quickly, thus is a big financial risk until there is stronger demand. Anyway, that's way more information than you asked for, as usual.

I hope you all have a great time. Sadly I am in a croquet tournament this weekend. Really.
Anyhow I'm popping by Barney's on the way so he can bring some of my brews over for you to try. If you don't get to try any he's snaffled the lot himself!
Enjoy!
