Chucked in the elderflower – absolutely NO aroma from it what-so-ever... may need to rethink that next time.

Just off to get the wort cooler ready...
Giving the irish moss extra time is actully counter productive, the large floccs of proteins which are produced by the addition of irish moss will start to break up again if left to long (defeats the purpose). That said i wouldn't worry about it just something to bear in mind for the next time. As far as the boilover affecting the hotbreak i don't think it will have since in essence the boil over was your hotbreak you just let it get a bit too vigorous

Right then, now running off into the boiler, which so far is going well (that'll be the kiss of doom!).

This is usually where things go a little pear shaped. Normally everything stops...I give it a stir, and wait for 10 minutes... then it stops again...etc etc...until I get fed up and try to strain the biggest bits out of the wort through a sieve.

Fingers crossed x 8-[

So, as always I had trouble going from the boiler to the fermenter. The first 15 litres went fine, nice and clear too, but then...nothing...

After trying to restart it etc, I decided to syphon off the clear stuff off the top and discard the rest. It meant i ended up with 21 litres.

Pitched the yeast at 21 degrees and it's now sitting comfortably in its corner of the lounge... time for a beer I think. I'll keep this log updated when I can...bye for now.

Nice to see that you got there in the end despite your couple of hiccups. 8)

Great pics btw & I am sure the finished brew will be worth the effort.

What kind of hopstopper do you have, i was for ever getting stuck run-offs from the boiler.
Mine was a H&G stopper it was woeful at first, then i cut more slits, which worked a bit better, then i resorted to drilling holes in the other side. Worked a treat but i made them too big and bits of hop and all sorts came through it, tried to rectify the situation by wrapping the whole kit and caboodle in a 'stainless' splatter guard, worked brilliantly but turned out it wasn't stainless it rusted like hell and im convinced it gave a few of my beers an off flavour, its now in the bin (the splatter guard that is). On my latest brew i reused the hop strainer but this time i had the slits facing upwards and the holes underneath, worked like a charm, why i didn't think to use it that way in the first place i'll never know #-o

Thanks delboy and Hoppy,

both sound like great ideas, I may even try both at the same time... and yes it is the basic H&G hop strainer.

The yeast is merrily doing its thing this morning, and I'd just read an old post from someone who says that the smell of elderflower ofter doesn't come through during/post boil, but in the fermenter/keg/bottle...and get's better with age. Woo Hoo!!!

ps: The OG was 1.050
