Woke up this morning to find this:

I used a sanitised spoon and skimmed the majority off and within minutes a much cleaner looking krausen appeared:

So far so good! I must say the difference in appearance and smell of this AG brew is so much better than any of the kits I have ever done in the past.

Not that people should fiddle more than is necessary with their beer.....but how's this going? What's your specific gravity after a week?

Ah the break material....don't worry about it...I've had wort that had lots of break material in it ..yet came out of the keg beautifully clear and tasted perfect (most of my brews actually) and I've had a light summer ale that I spent a lot of time over to ensure that all my runnings were clear (even drained the trub off via a conical) almost no break material went into the fermenter and it tastes wonderful....but it is hazy as hell & looks 5hite

Give me the break material Everytime.

Good firs AG Q...there'll be no stoppin you now

Hey guys, sorry for not updating sooner, been away from my PC for a while.

SiHoltye, it stopped at 1.010 after about 4 days and stayed there. I left it in primary until day 9 then I transferred to a corni. It was already very clear by then, S04 seems to clear very quickly. I think the ABV is just shy of 4.2% so not too bad.

Taste wise, it is already fantastic! Had a pint from the bottom of the fermenter and it has a lovely bitterness and a refreshing aftertaste.

All in all, I am very happy with my first AG, just need to invest in more cornis before I start my next one!

Good work QA, I love single variety hop beers. Challenger and Goldings especially. It'll taste even better under a bit of carbonation and left to mature.

Just been going back through the brewdays with pics and found this one.
On the boil-over issue... I have this to say :) :
In the medieval period the brewers would have a big wicka fan with which they used to literally beat the top of the boiling wort, this stopped it from boiling over.
I find that if you use a cordless drill with one of those paint stirers on it, and you mix really well (go on, get a tornado going) a few times before boiling point, it won't boil over.
Of course, for your first AG you're going to do what you did and fill the boiler right to the top too... that's what I did... :)

Just a quick update with a few pics of the brew 2 weeks in the corni

Initial tasting impression is very positive. It has that classic challenger taste that I love and the bitterness level makes it easy to drink. It reminds me a lot of Coniston Bluebird but perhaps a litte more "fruity" (It fermented at 23C which may be the reason for that).

Anyway, I am really pleased with it so far, just need to keep my hands of it for another few weeks, I have had about 6 pints out of it this week so at that rate it wont last long!

Beautiful. Can you stick some in a padded envelope?

even better, I will saturate a bit of kitchen roll and stick that in a padded envelope - you can then squeeze it out into a glass when you get it.. Probably still taste better than Carling :)
