AG#8 - Horden Hillbilly's Pilsner - 28/6/08

Post by ECR » Sun Jun 29, 2008 7:33 pm

This was the first of my three brews this weekend (recipe slightly modified to use what I had in stock!):

3000g Pilsner Malt
400g Carapils
400g Flaked Maize
400g Glucose

63g Saaz - 60 minutes

SafLager yeast

The grain bill:

90 minute mash:

Just coming to the boil:

I had a bit of a problem with running off from the mash tun, as it stuck and refused to restart despite me blowing back up the run-off tube etc. I think the plastic Listerman false bottom which I have used for the last few brews was being squashed flat by the weight of the grain so that the take-up for the run-off was being pressed against the bottom of the bucket, cutting off the flow. So I did away with the false bottom and transferred the mash into my old sparging bag, which did the job nicely.

Then, as soon as it started to boil, the element cut out  , which was because it needed cleaning, as set out on some other threads. I just let it run for this one, with it starting to boil and then cutting out. I hope it will have done enough - but I will find that out in a few weeks! [-o<

It's bubbling away quite happily in the garage now.

This one was finished at about 7pm yesterday, and I kicked off the second brew of the weekend - my "House" bitter.

This went into the keg last Friday (11/7/08).

I started with 25 litres (more than intended due to the element problem) in the FV at 1.038. It fermented down to 1.003, which was the same as the last lot I did.

Looked/smelled/tasted very good when it went into the keg, so now there's just the waiting
