AG #9 - "House" bitter - 28/6/08

Post by ECR » Sun Jun 29, 2008 7:42 pm

The second brew of the weekend - my standard bitter, based (believe it or not) on Bob Pritchard's "All-Grain Best Bitter" recipe from his partcularly fine book "All About Beer" :

4000g Maris Otter
500g Crystal

70g Goldings - 60 minutes

Nottingham yeast

The grain bill:

90 minute mash:

First runnings:

Start of the boil:

(Having cleaned an IMMENSE amount of crud off the underside of the element it behaved itself this time :D )

Running into fermenter:

All done by about midnight - two hours or so quicker than my usual brewing time 8)

This one smells really good. I was a bit worried that it might not be up to scratch as my sack of Maris Otter is getting on a bit, but no obvious problem so far.

Well done ECR...Interesting to see that you put all your hops in at 60min.

I can never resist the temptation to put some in near the end of the boil or after flameout....and yet sometimes I just fancy a good ole English bitter with a bit less hop taste. So I might just give this a try
