Brewday 10-08-08 "Amberflower Ale"

Post by jamesb » Sun Aug 10, 2008 7:43 am

It's far too early to be up on a Sunday.

Water's on.

It's the same recipe as Wezerection Easter Ale. I did this for my last brew and it's stunning. So stunning that I had to do it again to bottle it.

5kg Pale Malt
250g Crystal Malt
30g Northern Brewer (90)
25g Challenger (90)
10g Challanger (10)
50g Dried Elderflowers (15)
Mash 67deg, 90 mins
S-04 Yeast

I also get to try my new sparge arm - saves me sitting there for an hour with the watering can. I'm also going to try the Whirlfloc tablets that I got as a sample from H&G.

Sorry, no photos. Missus is away for the weekend and she's got the camera.

Now... more caffeine.

Just on the boil now. The new neighbours are looking at me as if I'm weird.

Those sparge arms are wonderful. So much easier than the watering can method.

They will soon appreciate having a home brewer next door to them! :D

just starting my 1st AG brew today, though I got up a tad later than you James. Just heating the water for the mash as we speak. I'll try and do some photos... and start another thread, so as not to hijack this one

Good luck with that, and try not to worry too much. I thought my first AG day was a bit of a nightmare but it turned out ok in the end.

Putting it into the fermenting bucket now.

OG 1052 (corrected for temperature). Last time I did this one I got 1044 so my efficiency is up - I had a feeling I sparged it too fast this time. There was definately some sugars left in the mash this time, I had to stop otherwise it would never have all fitted in my boiler -as it was I filled up a 3l jug to use to top the boiler up after the main hot break.

Slow run off from the boiler though - must have a small blockage somewhere.

I can definately see a difference between the whirlfloc and the irish moss I usually use. Lots of protein clouds.
