AG #5 My own recipe with pics

Post by youreds91 » Sun Sep 28, 2008 10:36 pm

Ok, maybe a little picture overload here, but here we go...

My first 4 AGs are in the kegs with #1 being supped as I type. This one is my own recipe done with Beersmith & a little advice on the AG forum.

4.00 kg Pale Malt, Maris Otter
0.30 kg Crystal Malt
0.30 kg Torrified Wheat
45.00 gm Fuggles [4.40 %] (90 min)
20.00 gm Challenger [7.10 %] (90 min)
10.00 gm Goldings, East Kent [4.60 %] (0 min)

Grain all ready

Strike water going in, note that I have replaced the plastic pipe with copper in the manifold.

Mash underway. The coolbox is excellent, but the lid has no insulation so the sleeping bag comes into play. I did some thermometer shots, but they were steamy & went a bit wrong in resizing. You'll have to take my word that it barely dropped from 67°C during 90 minutes.

The long awaited hop strainer, I was being a cheapskate & thought I could get away without it in earlier brews, it's great.

First batch of sparge water in.

First runnings into the boiler, pic went a bit wrong on the resize.... :?

2nd batch going in..

Last runnings into the boiler

Hops in...

Spent grains

Boil just getting going

Cooler in

Lovely clear wort, thanks to the person in another thread who said to wait 20 minutes after cooling to let the trub settle, worked a treat. Also used a protoflac tablet.

Needs to die down a bit before I pitch :o

Image

OG a tad over 1040, I hoped for a bit better.

Hops & trub

I have an inkling feeling this will be my best yet. I'll have to leave it to ferment all alone as I'm away from tomorrow until Friday.

Can't beat this AG lark....

great looking brewday and good pics

if your mash tun has space inside the lid, drill a few holes and squirt in some expanding foam, I did this with mine and it helped, I would probably still wrap it up though
