Martial Ants Just Cascade.
Re: Martial Ants Just Cascade.
The FV as a tap on so i just fill the test jar from the tap, i never open the lid during fermentation.
Its still at SG 1012 so i guess it must have finished or its just about there.
Will drinking it smelling of vinegar be ok or will it cause the Galloping Ab Dabs
as i dont want to throwyet another away.

CAnt recall mine having an iffy whiff but carry on as normal. It may get better with age. Could be the smell of your hop that your not used to. Stick it in secondary then rack it. What have you got to lose?
You will know after a few.haz66 wrote:Will drinking it smelling of vinegar be ok or will it cause the Galloping Ab Dabs
Re: Martial Ants Just Cascade.
I`m not going to throw this one down the loo just yet i`ve now got plenty of Kegs to be able to
keep it for quite a while, i`ll just leave it alone once kegged and see if its going down my neck
down the loo or on my chips
Hopefully the first option would be best.

Re: Martial Ants Just Cascade.
What does it taste like? You can sometimes get funny off smells from the yeast when in fact everything is fine. If it tastes strongly like vinegar, I'd chuck it now and get another on the go....
Re: Martial Ants Just Cascade.
Yes how strong was the Vinegar Smell even? I Kegged an IPA yesterday, in the fermenter it had a slight acidic smell. When i took a crafy shot glass from the the kegged beer though (same day) the result was very different. I wonder if the head of yeast holds some undesirable smells?coatesg wrote:What does it taste like? You can sometimes get funny off smells from the yeast when in fact everything is fine. Re: Martial Ants Just Cascade.
It only smells slightly of vinegar but doesn`t taste of vinegar, infact it tastes very nice.
If i drink it holding my nose i wont even know
Just drew some off from the keg, the vinegar smell is only very faint now.
But the taste is even better than i remember from yesterday.

Re: Martial Ants Just Cascade.
Had another sample last night (half a pint infact)
The vinegar smell is only just there now, just a slight whiff thats all.
Taste wise not a hint of vinegar, still a bit sharp but mellowing nicely
Bloody glad i keep it now, its turning out alright.

WOW.
Had another tester pint of this last night and it`s bloody cracking.
All the vinegar smell as totaly gone now and the taste is amazing.
Just needs another week i`d say as there is just a slight bitterness to the after taste.
But its got a great aroma and a nice hoppy taste.
And to think this nearly went down the loo.

Re: Martial Ants Just Cascade.
Haz - How hot was your sparge water? Thinking back i made a plain brew Fuggles/WGV & my sparge water was near boiling. That made my fermenting brew smell like vinegar. Infact there was something bad about it. Turned into hangover material. I think i caused something like acetylahydes.
Re: Martial Ants Just Cascade.
The sparge water was at 70C but i let it drop to 68C before i actually started sparging.
The temp in the boiler seemed to jump really quick from 60C to 70C so i missed turning it off at the right temp
so i just let it cool for a few mins before i started.
The first brew i did i sparged at 75C as i mis calculated from F to C and that turned out ok.
