Decided to brew yesterday as I had a friend visiting and he was interested in the brewing process. Put together a simple recipe using just pale malt but with plenty of aroma hops.
Not sure I can strictly call it an IPA as it is a bit pale even for that. It is also lightly hopped for a proper IPA and not as strong but I wanted more of a session beer since my Bumble Bee and Hobgoblin are a bit strong for general supping...
Anyway, here's the recipe (IPA or not):
Brew length 19 litre based on 85% efficiency
3300 gm Pale Malt, Maris Otter (3.0 SRM)
32 gm Progress [6.00%] (90 min) Hops 28.0 IBU
52 gm Progress [6.00%] (15 min) Hops 21.1 IBU
30 gm Progress [6.00%] (30 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep)
30 gm Styrian Goldings [5.00%] (30 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep)
1 tbt Whirl Floc (Boil 15.0 min)
SafAle English Ale (DCL Yeast #S-04)
Mash 90 mins in 10 litres at 68C
Boil total 90 mins
Expected: OG = 1.044 FG = 1.012 SRM = 4.1 IBU = 49.1
Actual: OG = 1.045 Efficiency = 86.5%
I'll post a couple of pictures when I get a minute to download them from the camera...

Golden ales are listed as a type of beer in my Camra good beer guide 2006, it mentions summer lightening and exmoor gold as examples, and says that tart citrus fruit and peppery hop flavours are a notable characterisitic. I guess bitter and twisted is another exampleDaaB wrote: I tend to refer to them as golden ales since seeing the term once to describe that type of beer. I dont know if it is an officialy recognised term.

Sorry, I'll try to make it clearer:mysterio wrote:I'm having trouble understanding the hopping schedule. You're getting a big chunk of IBUs from the 15 minute hops and your aroma from a 30 minute boil??
Bittering - 32 gm Progress [6.00%] (90 min) Hops 28.0 IBU
Bittering+ - 52 gm Progress [6.00%] (15 min) Hops 21.1 IBU
Aroma - 30 gm Progress [6.00%] (30 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep)
Aroma - 30 gm Styrian Goldings [5.00%] (30 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep)
The aroma hops only went in at the end of the boil so they had 30 minutes to steep before starting CFC. Hope this is clearer?
Here's a couple of pictures:

Yes, very pale. Here's a photo I have just taken while measuring the gravity. The gravity has now been stable at 1017 for the last two days but it is only now just dropping brightDaaB wrote:wow! thats pale

Had to drink the trial jar of course
