On checking your planned recipe against one I used in 2006, which was based on dividing the recipe for Old Thumper in GW's first recipe book by 1.2 as per GW's advice the differences are so small as to make them not worth posting.

The planned OG was 1048 and mine came out at 1047 for 25.25litres. It was bottled and turned out nice :D

Good luck with your brewing day :D

Cheers guys. I pumped the grain and hops into BeerSmith altering the AA for my hops. Norms recepie gives 28 IBUs and 1.048 graity. Mine with the hops AA altered from the beersmith defaults came out at 32 IBUs and 1.050. Should I alter? it seems the ratios of bittering hops to extra gravity (probably as the recepie was based on 25L brewlength where as mine is 23L) seem the same.

Well thats AG number 2 tucked away in the fermentor. It all went perfectly untill I dropped the thermometer and sieve into the fermentor right at the end. Had to spray some idophor solution on my arm and dive in! Hope I avoided infection!

Anyway heres the pics.

The Grain bill and hops. After the Tim Taylor its first time i've user Crystal malt.

Doughing in. Managed to hit 67°straight away. The strike temp calcualtor on here is brilliant!

Tucked in for 90 mins

Batch sparging and recycling the first runnings. Looks like a nice colour!

up to a rolling boil and the Progress and Challenger go in.
Image Image
Cooling using the CFC and again struglle to keep it as high as 20° as I start with wort coming out at 10°.
Image
Plenty of crud at the bottom of the boiler this time as I remebered the Irish moss!
Image
Hit the gravity bang on 1.050!

I pitched a packet of hydrated SO4. Looking forward to this one if it avoids infection from me sticking my arm in!

No it was just to prevent the grain bed from being disturved when returning the runnings for recycling.

tbh, I still do the exact same thing, I still haven't found or thought up a better way, foil with holes in is the future....

I should probably just use a plastic plate with holes in like Chris' false bottom, but I just can't be arsed.....see what I did there...?

Good to see the mop bucket at the ready! :)

That's what I hate most about brewday, feet sticking to spilt wort on the floor!

OK its been over 24 hours since I pitched now and there is a moderate foamy head of about 10mm on the top of the beer. I normally get a massive foamy head on all my other beers (nearly bursting out of the FV) and they all used SO4 too. Do you think there is a problem? This is the first beer I have done of a OG of 1.050. Its at least 2 point higher of previous brews I have done. Not sure if this is significant. Just getting worried thats all.

After 7 days this appers to have finished fermentaion. Gravity reading of 1.012 which I think is done so I may keg today. And its so clear! really happy about that as my first AG brew (Tim Taylor Landlord) is still VERY cloudy and I dont really know what to do about that. It looks like a German wheat beer or something even after isinglass finings in secondary and a week in the keg. I'll post a pic of that in the post anyway but any ideas? I guess the moral of the story is dont forget finings in the copper at the end of the boil.

anyways heres the pics of the Fortyniner
