Back to AG this weekend, what to brew.....

Post by Bionicmunky » Fri Feb 13, 2009 10:08 pm

Fingers crossed I get to go back to AG this weekend using the new Mk II brewery . (HERMS - photo's if it works  )

I need another trip to Wickes to finish up the pipework but hopefully should get it ready for tuning in the morning [-o<

Now, what to brew?

I need a quick turn around ale as my stocks are down to 1/2 a corny.

Brewlength 42L (2 cornies plus a bottle)

Ingredients in stock are:

Malts:

MO
Crystal
Brown
Black
Carapils
Torried Wheat

Hops:

Fuggles
Goldings
Northern Brewer

And possibly low quantities of (need to check freezer) cascade, challenger, Styrians.

Yeasts:

S04
US05
Nottingham

I'd like a bitter, esb or pale.

What do you reckon peeps?

Well herms is off, but the brew is on. Still don't know what yet though.

Mebbeh Bosun's out of Marks book.

HERMS is out due to element sealing problem in the heat exchanger.

I'd go for a nice, fairly hoppy, pale ale, around the 4 -4.5% abv, using Goldings @ 60 mins, Fuggles @ 15 mins and the rest of your styrians at 80C. I'd use the TW for decent head retention and the crystal for a bit of colour. Keep it simple and all that

Ended up being a hell of a day.

Added to the element seal issue are:

Slight tap leak on Mash Tun, sorted.
Pump wouldn't pump, tried to gravity prime it (totton gp) nothing but the pump whiring, so no recirc at the mash out.
New boiler, slight leak at tap and also one element.

At least I managed to get 42 litres @ 1050 into the FV, and once again I stink of hops - Lovely!

Steve missed the boat a bit on the recipe suggestion, but thanks mate.

I brewed The beer with no name:

8.5 KG Marris Otter
600g UK Crystal

100g Goldings FWH 60 mins boil (30 IBU), Thought i'd give FWH a go after seeing ADM's recent brews
100g Styrian Goldings 30mins steep from 85C

2x Protofloc

2x Satchets S04

As mentioned above I got 42L @ 1050 and smells awesome!

Don't have any pics as it was a bit of hectic day.

Now to cook dinner for SWMBO to thank her for letting me brew on Valentines day bless her.

Kegged this one this evening.

Still smells a bit odd, still wondering if its fusels or perhaps the 100g of almost out of date Styrians in 42L as flameout hops.

I'll give it a week in the kegs and see how it is.
