Cold Out Stout

Post by purple_chicken » Wed Feb 04, 2009 11:11 am

Its turned out that tuesday night is SWMBO's bingo night ,
not anymore cause tuesday night is BREWING night....
AG #2 decided to go for an oatmeal stout,

MARIS OTTER PALE MALT 3300 gms
CHOCOLATE MALT 410 gms
CRYSTAL MALT 370 gms
WHEAT MALT 140 gms
MALTED OATS 320 gms

NORTHDOWN 20 gms
CHALLENGER 16 gms

after a few hiccups with AG#1 i managed to sort out my grain bed filter, hop strainer and remembered to put in a whirlfloc tablet, all seemed to go really well.

Started at
6:05pm mash in
kids washed, jammies on and off to bed,
7:35pm 1st runnings and batch
8:05pm 2nd batch
9:05pm onto the boil
10:35pm off the boil and chiller in.
11:00 in the FV jobs a goodun.

It took a wee bit longer than expected to get it up to the boil, then again it was -5 outside, hence the name...

Looks like a good brew day mate.

I like your mash tun is it a colemans coolbox? How does it hold the heat for the mash as i see theres still plenty of space left so was just wondering?

yeh, ive been well impressed with it, got it for £23 off fleabay, didn't quite expect it to be so big but hay ho does the job. predrilled drain plug made conversion nice and easy. Keeps the heat fine, found about a 2 deg drop in 90 mins.

its the coleman 48qt cooler,
came with a drinks cooler and sandwich box, I'm sure I only paid around £23 but the link below is the same one, if you search around fleabay you might be able to get it for a decent price.

Managed to get round to bottling today,

transferred to a bottling bucket first which I now find a lot easier than trying to get exactly a spoon full of spraymalt into the top of a bottle.

I thought we all had hot tubs. How else do you guarantee an endless supply of bikini babes delivering an endless supply of perfectly-served homebrew?

built the decking round the hot-tub at just the rightt height so that when youre in it the corny is at the perfect height for leaning over and pouring yerself a pint. Thats why its called cold out stout. It my be cold out, but not in the tub 39.5degC perfect pint!!!!
