AG#1 started well .... ended in disaster

Post by woodworm » Sat Mar 14, 2009 10:32 am

1st brewday, had a go at Jims stock bitter, started out well everything going as expected.
2 stuck mashes later and a hop filter that fell apart during the runoff into the fermenter not a happy bunny
here's a few random images of the day:
learned a lot though and it was a lot of fun even if it was a complete ba*ls up and ended with a very very weak beer estimated at about 2% :? :(
still hopefully it will taste fantastic !!!!!! :D

Yup - sticky malt between the toes is another interesting experience!
Challenger - I think this hop has my favourite smell, even nudging ahead of the smell of grain being doughed in..

My last brew I forgot the hop strainer entirely and only remember at the end of the boil..

Stuck mashes - could be the ingredients have alot of flour settled out during transit/storage.

Dont lose heart, we all have a bad brew day once in a while.
Mine today was going well and also got a stuck mash, but a bit of jiggery pockery
later and all was well.
Only just bunged the yeast in about 30mins ago so hopefully she will be bubbling away soon.

Even if your beer is a low gravity one, if it tastes good then at least you know you can always
up the gravity next time, it should still taste ok with the fuggles and challenger anyway.
