Spitfire Ale.

Did this today. I used Challanger instead of the Target hops that was stated.

I had another problem with a stuck/slow run off when sparging. I think my manifold is to low in the tun, i get great effeciancy mind it just takes me over an hour to sparge which although no major problem is still a pain in the arse.

Anyway i got about 28 ltrs+ at 1047 so im chuffed, had to chuck some wort though as only had a 25ltr FV :( .

Wort was crystal clear also which was a bonus.

Not sure whats going on with my effeciency lately but im always getting over volume and over OG :D

What ive done to the mash tun is bend the long copper pipe backwards so it lifts the manifold off the bottom of the tun a fraction. It means ive now got 1ltr of dead space instead of 300ml lol but hopefully the sparge will quicker.

25 litre batch OG 1045 ABV 4.7 35 units of colour 43 EBU

HALCYON PALE MALT 3754 gms
AMBER MALT 250 gms
CRYSTAL MALT 400 gms
WHEAT MALT 200 gms
TORRIFIED WHEAT 400 gms

HOPS Boil time 90 minutes

CHALLANGER 42 gms
GOLDINGS 28 gms
Add 10 gms Goldings last 15 minutes.

Nottingham Yeast

The copper manifold in my MT sits right on the bottom of the tun and I don't have slow run off problems but then again I'm in no rush with the sparge. The only thing I can suggest is drilling a small hole or two in the top of the manifold (assuming your slots are in the bottom) to allow any trapped air to escape.

The only other problem I get is that I use larger diameter pipe than most people from the MT tap into the copper and this causes the wort to back up the pipe once the end of it is under the surface of the wort. Therefore I have to rig the end of the pipe with a bit of string  to keep the end of the pipe above the surface but in such a way as to get the wort running down the side of the copper to minimise air being dissolved in the wort during the run off.
