AG#4 - Crystal Lake (Friday 13th)

Post by Kristoff » Sun Feb 15, 2009 2:37 pm

Knocked this together on friday (13th) - hence the name, tribute to the best slasher film ever made

4.3kg Pale Malt
1kg Wheat Malt
250g Crystal Malt (had to put this in) :)

2hr mash

36g Pilgrim 11.4% 90min
5g Goldings 15min
5g Fuggles 15min
5g Goldings at 80deg
5g Fuggles at 80deg

Got 22litres at 1052, I wanted it a bit stronger, should of boiled for a bit more.
Can anyone say what my brewhouse efficiency is - i'm thinking it's a bit low :(

Hoping for something with a nice malty flavour and some hop aroma.

I might dry hop with some Goldings or Fuggles, which one would give a better aroma?

BTW, up until now i've been using loose hops, but the fuggles i've got were foil vacuum packed, what a difference
I'll be buying foil packs from now on :D

I make that about 67% brewhouse efficiency. Not bad at all. :D
Kegged: 'Nowt
Bottled: Summer Lightning, Belfast Ale, JPA, Guinness Foreign Export

ProMash makes it 65% efficiency for 22 l @ 1052.
Maybe a bit on the low side but it's not a competition, it just means you use a bit more malt for the same results.
If you want to improve the efficiency you probably need to look at your sparging.

I'm a lazy batch sparger and I get between 70% and 75% efficiency.

Update on this....
AMAZING :D
OG 1052
FG 1008
5.8% abv
Dry hopped with 15g of goldings for 4 days in the FV
I am seriously impressed with this one.
Fantastic malty taste, the wheat gives it a creamy mounthfeel, with a fantastic zing at the end from the Goldings 8)
Served from a budget barrel primed with glucose, it's got a deep creamy head, which lasts all the way down the pint glass.
Can you tell - i'm chuffed with this one
Needs another week to clear completely, bit slow, cos of the wheat.

... the point is Kris, if it tastes great, it's not for a competition, and (more important) it's not to show off to your mates, ... who cares if its clear or not

Nice going, Kristoff. Perhaps this will be the first in a line of slasher-inspired beer -- how about a cheeky Elm Street Bitter next? :D

How did this taste? Did it clear? Was the pilgrim overpowering, with respect to the fuggles and goldings?
