AG#057 - Prizefighter

Hello,

With this modestly monickered brew I'm hoping for a monsterously successful Best Bitter for a friends BBQ mid May. Pressures always on when you say you make beer at home and then take some someplace 8-[

Ingredients
23L @ 85% efficiency, 90min mash @ 67.8°C, 90min boil, liquor = bitter
Amount Item Type % or IBU
3.47 kg Maris Otter (5.9 EBC) Grain 85.00 %
0.24 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (120.0 EBC) Grain 6.00 %
0.24 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt -120L (236.4 EBC) Grain 6.00 %
0.12 kg Caramalt (26.0 EBC) Grain 3.00 %
22.00 gm Goldings, East Kent [3.78 %] (90 min) Hops 8.7 IBU
17.00 gm Northdown [8.32 %] (90 min) Hops 14.7 IBU
10.00 gm Goldings, East Kent [3.78 %] (20 min) Hops 2.2 IBU
10.00 gm Northdown [8.32 %] (20 min) Hops 4.9 IBU
15.00 gm Northdown [8.32 %] (1 min) Hops 0.5 IBU
15.00 gm Northdown [8.32 %] (Dry Hop 30 days) Hops -
1 Pkgs Edinburgh Ale (White Labs #WLP028) Yeast-Ale

Beer Profile
Est Original Gravity: 1.047 SG
Est Final Gravity: 1.011 SG
Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 4.64 %
Bitterness: 31.0 IBU
Est Color: 23.3 EBC

I'm thinking lots of crystal depth and sweetness from the caramalt to balance the bitey Northdown additions. Can't wait for brew day, ooo 00:01, we're there

Thanks lads!

Opened the kegerator this morning to find I'd not pushed on the disconnect on a keg far enough last night   :out

Got the boil on and got busy with the mop getting out the 1cm pool of pale ale  Could have been worse/more.

All done and dusted. 19L at 1.045 so estimates were off the mark. They always seem to be at the moment. I can understand why I'm down on volume because I saw the preboil SG to be 1.036 & ½L too much, and so boiled hard to achieve that 1.045, evaporation being the pay off. So mash efficiency seems down. Hey ho should fill a corni, and that's the main thing 8)

This is first time of using 120L crystal. Tasted nice in the sample and am looking forward to another sample once WLP028 has snaffled up the sugars (and prolly a few in between  )

I had a similar case on Wed night kegging my last batch.
First cornie filled and gased, put on one side while i filled the next.
20 mins later when the second cornie was filled, i then noticed a copper coloured liquid trail on the floor from the first cornie!! #-o

Soddin' poppet was not seated and sealing so the ale under 20psi decide to escape.
Probably lost less than 1/2 pint, but could have been worse.
Check out the beers we have for sale @ Mix Brewery

Tom Cribb - English World Boxing Champion 1810. The fight took place in my village.

From the gospel according to Wiki:
...a number of significant boxing prize fights took place in Copthorne Common in the early 1800s. A significant one was the English championship in 1810, between Tom Cribb of Bristol and Tom Molineaux from Virginia, USA.

Dull but true  (It's a bit quiet round here tbh)

Tasty beer. Bit too big on the crystal with (tbh) its flavour a bit overpowering. I like that favour though so it's not beer lost. A good marker for me in the continuing pursuit of perfect best bitter  8)
