AG No 4 + 5 (2 brew, brew day) + pics

Post by leedsbrew » Sat May 30, 2009 9:07 am

With supplies running a bit low, I decided to try to get 2 brews done in the same day (28.05.09). All my previous AG efforts (bar the 1st AG) have taken about 5 hours, so at midday myself and a mate started:

Poplars Pale Mk4

Target 26-28 L Actual 23.5 L

Fermentables
Ingredient Amount % MCU When
UK Pale Ale Malt 4.330 kg 85.2 % 3.9 In Mash/Steeped
UK Torrified Wheat 0.500 kg 9.8 % 0.3 In Mash/Steeped
UK Medium Crystal 0.255 kg 5.0 % 4.6 In Mash/Steeped

Hops
Variety Alpha Amount IBU Form When
Slovenian Styrian Goldings 4.5 % 51 g 21.0 Loose Whole Hops All Of Boil
US Cascade 7.6 % 25 g 17.3 Loose Whole Hops All Of Boil
Slovenian Styrian Goldings 4.5 % 11 g 2.2 Loose Whole Hops 15 Min From End
US Cascade 7.6 % 10 g 0.0 Loose Whole Hops At turn off

Other Ingredients
Ingredient Amount When
Irish Moss 5 g In Boil

Yeast
DCL S-04-SafAle

couple of things didn't go to plan. Wanted to use Saf US 05 but Ian @ Leeds Abbey Home brew didn't have any in so it was back to good old 04. Also we were a bit short on the final beer. Will need to turn the boil down a bit next time as we got way more evaporation than usual.

We were aiming for 1.042 and got 1.048 so an expected ABV of 4.9%

As we were trying to get 2 in I forgot to get the camera out for PP Mk4. oops. Managed to get a couple of the next brew though.

So at 16:30 We started to get the strike water for the next brew up 2 temp.

The Guiseley Well's Steam Beer Mk2 - 7B-Amber Hybrid Beer-California Common Beer

Target 30L Actual 27.5L

Fermentables
Ingredient Amount % MCU When
UK Pale Ale Malt 5.280 kg 80.0 % 4.4 In Mash/Steeped
UK Medium Crystal 0.990 kg 15.0 % 16.5 In Mash/Steeped
UK Munich Malt 0.330 kg 5.0 % 0.5 In Mash/Steeped

Hops
Variety Alpha Amount IBU Form When
German Northern Brewer 10.0 % 49 g 36.5 Loose Whole Hops All Of Boil
US Cascade 6.0 % 12 g 2.7 Loose Whole Hops 15 Min From End
US Cascade 6.0 % 12 g 2.0 Loose Whole Hops 10 Min From End
US Cascade 6.0 % 12 g 0.0 Loose Whole Hops At turn off
US Cascade 6.0 % 25 g 0.0 Loose Whole Hops Dry-Hopped

Other Ingredients
Ingredient Amount When
Irish Moss 5 g In Boil

Yeast
DCL S-04-SafAle

Again wished we coupld of had US 05 but Ian is getting us a bulk lot in for the next few brews.

Was aiming for 1.054 and got 1.062 so should be 6.5% by beeralchemy's calculations.

Well done. Looks a nice one. It looks like you could do with a bit more head room in your boiler though :)

Thanks garwatts. Aye, the old burco is a little tight on head space. It has been a good starting boiler but I think it's gonna get relegated to HLT. Been looking at the posts one here about Nordic Pots. Seems the obvious next step.

Looking good leedsbrew. I am about to make an IPA using cascades.
If you find that particular shop expensive and sometimes out of stock try Paul at barleybottom.co.uk. With you being in leeds you are close enough to call round and collect. You will save a lot of cash, enough to brew more beer infact.
:D
