AG#9 Big lamp Bitter

Post by BrewerBen » Sat Jun 20, 2009 2:37 pm

A bit late posting as i did this the other week. I wanted a nice session bitter so chose this brew from Graham wheeler's Book.
I wont post the recipe, just a few pics.

A couple of unexpected thing's happened to the brew, the first was the Starting gravity. I adjusted the grain bill for my usual 70% efficiency but ended up getting wort at 1.046 rather than 1.040 while getting the correct volume's giving me 78% efficiency. I did not change anything for this brew either just used my usual method.
The second thing was it fermented down very low, giving me a final gravity reading of 1.004 - 1.006 and a 5.21% brew. Not quite the session ale i was after but hopefully a good brew anyway.

I also deviated from the recipe a little as i wanted to give dry hopping a go so i racked after 7 days and added 5g of EKG's and 5g of fuggles for 3 days before bottling. Currently its been bottled for 3 days and i'm fighting the urge to crack one open to see what it's like.

Running off, not as clear as the last brew but not my worst either:

Hopefully lots of oxygen is in it for the fermentation:

Nice.

I've been making beer stronger than the recipe says for some time - now I'm trying to work out my efficiency so I can adjust the grain bill and the volumes to hit the target OG...

Looks that the UK-05 does clear nicely in the bottle.
