Here are the pics from yesterdays brew. Not 100% on the name for this one, any suggestions would be great!

Image
all the ingredients and the HLT heating up. All of the ingredients apart from 3KG of MO are left overs so cost nowt! Bonus!

Image
UK Pale Ale Malt 4.407 kg 85.0 %
German Munich Malt 0.518 kg 10.0 %
UK Medium Crystal 0.259 kg 5.0 %

Image
My mate John's ham fisted attempt at doughing in =D> !

Image
Temp pretty much bang on

Image
Mash after 60 mins

Image
1st runnings.

Image
This is the 1st time I have made a hop 'tea' with the boil hops so very interested to see how it works (SWMBO put a stop to me using the cafetiere :? LOL)

Image
expected pre-boil gravity was 1.048. this was taken at 54 deg C so = 1.050

Image
Boil on the go (notice my microwave covered in doughing in splats! cheers John! =D> )

Image
Image
Hot break. I have recently upped my boils from 60 mins to 90. I know there has been disscusion on here about the difference. I use irish moss instead of PF or WF tabs. I have found that the extra 30 mins boil really helps get a better hot break.

Image
IC in to sterilise

Image
From left to right, Northern Brewer hop 'tea', 30g Cascade (15g - 15min, 15g - 1 min), 20g Styrian Goldings. The cascade is still pretty compressed from the vac pac, that's why it looks like less hops than the Styrians.

Image
OG @ 50.8 deg = 1.050 so therefore OG @ 20 deg = 1.061. BeerAlchemy's estimate was 1.060 so very very pleased with that!

Image
nice clear wort going into FV

Image
Aerated and yeast pitched! job done

All in all, very happy with the way everything went yesterday :D :D :D . Looking forward to tasting this.

Any comments, advice always welcome!

Cheers chaps

Why would someone have a problem about using the cafetiere??
Must just be me, I seem to get away with everything, she just gets bored when the brewday drags on a bit :)
I might have to try the Hop tea thing, I've not done that since I was doing Kits.
Looks a pretty organised brewday, hope its a good one :)

LOL no idea! Although Im not arguing as I'm sure brewing could be relegated back to the garage if I went on about it too much! LOL. I read about the hop tea idea on here somewhere, sounded like a good idea, getting some aroma out of your bittering hops! Smells bloody lovely coming out of the airlock this AM! :D

just had a quick look under the lid. Saf04 has produced a nice crust on top already and the smell is awesome. Very hoppy!

Looking very good. I reckon hop tea is going to be the next big thing :D

When running cooled wort from boiler to FV if you have a short piece of hose, enough to ensure a syphon effect, then allow the wort to drop into the vessel you'll get great aeration, plus you only have to sanitise the tap and a short length of tubing

do you have to modify the burco to keep on boiling for 90 mins? I was thinking of getting one has a hot liqour tank as thought it would switch off when it came to the boil

Cheers

I've not made any mods to the burco Andy. I use mine for HLT and boiler. Would defo recommend them

What do you Burco brewers use for a hop strainer that fits the tap well? Does the exposed element get in the way or hinder the hop strainers performance?

I've just bought a 30 litre Burco to use as an HLT but will double it up as a boiler to start with til I've completed my gas boiler.

Cheers,
Andy.

I use a down pipe and mesh at the moment. I plan on making a straight copper manifold with holes and do a comparison.
