brew day nightmare
brewing ruddles county started well , then went to sparge and the pipe from the mash tun to boiler clogged (fly sparging) blow up the pipe as I normally do nothing totally blocked. Had to empty the mash tun into another f.v. and found out the tube to stop the grains coming out had dislodged its self so the grains where clogging the outflow valve sorted that out , then started boiling had to run my son to his mates gone 1/2 hr and one of my elements in the boiler has packed up on my return so extended boiling time, still waiting for the third thing to go wrong .

I suggest that you crack open a home-brew...........that always smooths out the rough spots for me

Re: brew day nightmare
I'm on the case and the third thing was loads of trub into the fv but by that stage I didn't care. Wife was out for the day and number one son discided to cook fudge while the nightmare was happening outside. came inside the kitchen looked like a bomb had hit it .Note to self brew only when I'm by myself with no kids or wife asking stupid questions and wanting things done while I'm brewing.

I have just made up a copper strainer to get the max out of my boiler and I noticed today that a fair bit of trub made it into the FV. Will this lead to bad tastes? I suppose that mine sits a bit too close to the boiler bottom...

Re: brew day nightmare
I have a thread in brewdays started this evening where you can just about see it. It is basically a length of copper bent so that the last 1" touches the bottom of the boiler. This last inch has holes drilled all over it (perforated). Basically it sits right in the trub.
I don't want to hijack Jubbys thread with my problems though...!!

Re: brew day nightmare
I do have a strainer in the bottom of the boiler but because of increased boiling time because of down to one element I didn't make the quantity into the fv(calculation way off). so stirred up the bottom trying to get the last drop of liquid out , what I should have done was to leave it alone as the gravity was higher then just water it down to get the quantity and correct gravity , but was in a mood and rushed it.Anyway it's bubbling away really well .( yeast used wyeast 1098.)
