Turbo Cider with Sainsbury's pressed apple juice

Post by Jim » Fri Jun 19, 2009 6:44 pm

Will I never learn?

I thought I'd see what kind of cider this juice turns out. It's a bit murky at the moment!

Hey Jim, nice one! Should be a decent gallon of scrumpy!

Pinch of yeast nutrient in there too maybe?

Nice one Jim, just finished off my gallon batch of cloudy scrumpy, it'll never clear, and can taste a bit 'stale' but its cheap and does the job, not a drink for a tuned palette.

Heh! It's bubbling away nicely now. I didn't use any nutrient, but I'm sure it'll be fine; OG was about 50 (I didn't add any sugar).

I did want to try a proper cider yeast, but the wine yeast was the best I could get locally and I didn't want to send for just a pack of yeast on the internet. I'll look at that for next time though.

My TC made with just cheapo apple juice and cider yeast is still bubbling away (about a bubble every 10 seconds) in the garage. Kept it nice and cool (15 deg C or thereabouts) and it's still plodding along after 9 days. 8) Smells a bit odd (very yeasty) out of the airlock, but I'll reserve judgement for now! Going to rack it and fine it later next week and then transfer to bottles to mature. Not intending to prime them at all though, I like my cider still.

It will taste great Jim!!! :D
I did 4.5 litres about a month ago and the wife thought it was great

So at the moment we have 27litres on that I started last week.
I always use wine yeast it seems to turn out great

It always goes cloudy and smells sulphury but it settles down after a few weeks.

Good luck

I use the Youngs cider yeast as well. Makes for a great cider. Got a huge positive response to my last batch of apple, raspberry and honey cider. Come on Jim, 5 gallon batch you know you want to!

Mines been bottled a few weeks now. Still completely opaque, of course, and swmbo isn't impressed unfortunately, as it's very harsh at the moment. Maybe by christmas it'll be OK.
