lancsSteve and Mr C's Xmas Shed Based Brew Off

Post by lancsSteve » Fri Nov 13, 2009 7:00 pm

So my bro-in-law, aka 'Mr C' a longtime member of this forum and me (a relative newcomer) got together in his shed to brew up a storm for Xmas/New Year. Figured two brew lengths each would be only a 'little' more effort than just one and give us a range of beers and styles to go for... Anf that was our limit of FV's too :)

The venue: Mr C's Shed of brewing Joy:

So here we go - we went for;

ME:
Conniston Bluebird-a-like
Malted Oat Stout

Mr C:
Noonan Brew
Amber Ale

Recipes below - which came about through adaptation from found and tried recipes for the hops and malt we had available...

Me doughing in:

And Mr C

and then trying his first batch sparge (and NOT loving it - oooh turbid)

Image Image

The eternally turbid runnign s begin:

Image

Electrical issues trying to run two boilers through an extension lead necessitated I move my boiler and mash tun for brew #2 out of the shed:

Image

So with two boils on the go - time to mash in for brew #2

Image

Mr C gets his boil rolling:

Image

And his second brew mashing:

Image

As mentioned before... we had a few problems with electric/boiler cutting out and triping the extension lead. At the end of the first boil the reason became apparent

Image Image

Thankfully my mash tun (insulated Brupacks mash tun/boiler) is now fixed and works well as a boiler so ost-mash it had a quick clean up and was pressed into service :D

So onwards and upwards - Mr C gets his sarge water ready and had decided he was going to stick to fly sparging on batch 2.

Image

Darkness was falling and the brew continued...

Chilling brew number 1 and starting to lauter brew #2:

Image

Mmmm - dark oaty stouty goodness :)

Image

So time to get brew #1 (The 'Come-On-Son' Bluebird-a-like) into the FV

Image

Brewing likie a pirate:

Image

Waiting, patiently and quite still...

Image

Brew #1 in fermenter and number 2 (the malted oat stout) goes into the boiler

Image

Meanwhile Mr C gets brew number 2 sparging:

Image Image

The first two and the starter for number 3..

More sanitising...

Starting to pack up while chilling the amber ale

Finishing up...

A ghost appears bearing a fermenting vessel to collect the stout wort:

Dropping the cooled wort into the FV...

A man with a barrow of spent grain is a happy man indeed:

The amber ale going into FV:

And there we go - job done! (Well almost - just the small matters of fermentation, dropping, kegging and bottling to go!):

Looks like you had fun...

Sanitising with a shower? Have you any idea how many bugs live in a shower head? :)

Would that be the 'manky shower study'? http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/heal ... 909152059/
AVERAGE life expectancy can be extended by up to 10 years as long as you are willing to reek like a Frenchman, it was claimed last night.

A new study found that showers are filled with deadly bacteria, vindicating the French habit of using them as a place to string up dead geese.

Research director Professor Henry Brubaker said: "Every time you turn on a shower you may as well be smearing great handfuls of dog mess into your chest.

"Of course the French will claim to be ahead of the curve but the fact is they know nothing of shower based bacteria and simply enjoy stewing in their own effluent."

He added: "Nevertheless it is better to carry the heady stench of the Gaul than expose yourself to the sort of tiny risks that generate gigantic headlines."
