AG Mild

Post by OldSpeckledBadger » Tue Nov 17, 2009 6:51 pm

Knocked up an AG version of my Bostin Black Country Mild today:

23L
Pale Malt 3.5KG
Crystal Malt 250g
Black Malt 90g

Hops:
Fuggles 40g @ 60 mins

23 IBU

Decided to mash at 67C. MT only lost 1 degree over the 90 minutes so I was well chuffed with that. I decided to go for a residual alkalinity of 100 ppm CaCO3 which turned out to be a shade low as the mash pH was a bit low at 4.9. Nothing to really worry about though. Apart from that it all went smoothly. Pitched with S-04. Efficiency calculated as 82% which'll do me.
Best wishes

Sounds good Badger. It's on my "to do list". I keep getting side tracked into more hops and larger grain bills.............turns out as a dark bitter (mild with more hops) I WILL do a proper one soon :D

sounds good :D

i also did a mild this weekend just gone. mine wasn't quite so smooth though as i stupidly forgot to put the tap back on the f.v and when draining from the boiler into it i managed to loose five litres to the floor before realising. not happy

still got 18 litres though so its not the end of the world :)

My mild is coming on nicely, 1043 down to 1017 on Monday. Will check the gravity again on Saturday, but not expecting it to drop below 1015 really due a low attenuating yeast and plenty of flaked barley and crystal malt. :) At 1015, it should work out at 3.6%. It already tastes really flavoursome, although the malts need some time to come together (roasted, munich and crystal are the main flavour malts, with pale malt and flaked barley making up the rest of the grist).

I've not bothered with a gravity check yet. I'll probably give it 10 days in the FV anyway to drop most of the yeast out.
Best wishes

Yeah, well I have about 43 litres of this mild (including losses from the FV when racking) but cask/keg capacity for about 41 litres, so I need to dissipate mine somehow. If it was something stronger I'd do a few bottles, but I don't think it's worth it with a mild really.

If it's just a couple of litres left over I'd drop it into a 2 litre PET or drink it straight out of the FV. I've done the latter with the odd pint here and there and it's actually not bad.
