It might be that you had your camera too close to the subject. Also, depending on the way your camera focusses, it could be trying to focus on the background. Maybe try taking a couple from further back next time and see if that helps...(I think that most point and shoot type camera, unless on a macro setting, have about a foot's minimum focus length...although I am on my third pint of Ditch's Stout so I could be talking balls...)
Cheers for the advice but I was using my Nikon D70S - not exactly point and shoot as you can see!! Its probbly just too complicated for my simple brain

Just hit the macro button it should make it focus a little better, it's usually a picture of a flower or something on the button.

Good description of the pint, sounds like a good recipe.

In that case it will be something to do with the focussing settings you have it on. I guess it also depends on what kind of lens you have on it, I'm pretty sure most of my SLR lenses have an even longer minimum focus length (about a metre) than the point and shoots. If you have a macro lens, that would be the best plan for this sort of shot. Or decide that it probably doesn't matter whether it's totally in focus.

Also, the beer's looking lovely, sorry I didn't say that before...

Well, I am very glad that there was no disappointment!
As there were over two hours between your posts on Friday night (7:33 to 9:45), you must have been keeping the consumption rate down :^o :^o [-X
But nothing since......?

And I suspect that a person who buys a D70S does actually know how to use it but is too impatient/lazy
(Quite good focus on the kitchen paper though!! )

After nearly causing a national uprising with your TTL thread, this one has proved amusing and somewhat less likely to cause the next British Civil War....

He he....yes, I was defnitely impatient at that point. Dear old Phildodd has been trying his best to pass on photographic pearls of wisdom but the lesson learned is "check the bl**dy photo before you drink the pint (unless you are prepared to open another bottle)!

Having living in West Yorkshire for almost 3 years in the 80's I should have realised I was on dangerous ground calling a Yorkshire beer into question!!

You'd be surprised how many people I know who've spent hundreds on a decent camera without having the slightest clue how to use it properly...
At the end of the day, you've got to decide which is more important: having a good photo or drinking the beer. And I think we all know what the proper answer to that is...(this isn't Jim's Photography Kit after all!)
