Wadworth 6X Clone (update)

Post by Horatio » Sat Jan 09, 2010 2:44 pm

Started my first Ag brew for over four years this morning. Trying a Waddy's 6X clone using info from the Real Ale Almanac and GW's BYOBRA.

Going for 23l brew length. 23 IBU's. OG 1.044

Pale Malt MO 3.9kg
Crystal Malt 165g
Black Malt 32g
White Sugar 126g
Fuggles 66g (3.9 AA) 90 mins'
Goldings 10g (5.9 AA) 15 mins'
Irish Moss 5g 15 mins

Mash 90 mins @ 66.5c
Boil 90 mins'

Pre boil volume 30.5l

Mash and sparge went really well. First time using the new mash tun (coleman 10 gallon upright style beverage cooler), lost 1 degree over 90 minutes. I did put a couple of old towels on the top as the lid sounded hollow to me.

First time I have ever batch sparged too, so will be interesting to see what my efficiency will be. My pre boil volume fell about 2 litres short so need to look at my calculations again! I'm not expecting it to be bang on as I haven't brewed for years and my set up isl new and untested. But there lies the fun! :D

Only just remembered to get the camera out

I'm very happy; OG bang on at 1.044 and 23l in the FV :D :D :D

Fermenting away already! :D

If I had all the money I'd spent on brewing... I'd spend it on brewing!

Looking good Horatio, I like 6x a worthy pint.

I batch sparge at the moment. Fill the mash tun to level drain then measure the wort in the boiler, easier with a premarked depth stick. then adjust the second batch accordingly. Have even been known to pour a little extra liquor in the mash tun as I am doing the second sparge to make up the volume. I always go for over estimations as I can always boil it a bit longer or bottle the extra few pints and the efficency then doesn't take a beating.

We demand more pics than just that one!

Hi Prolix,

Is it possible to over sparge when batch sparging? I was worried about tannis etc but don't really know much about it all :?

More pics to follow... :D

Not with the "standard" two-batch sparge which most of us use.
Best wishes
