Benny's Brown Ale - 13/03/2010 - with comedy video goodness
I had a load of Dad's Taxi duties to do yesterday, and didn't expect to be able to get a brew on, but the angels of righteousness smiled upon me and I found the time in the end. I chucked a load of stuff together and ended up with something that might be similar to a Northern Brown Ale....or not.
Anyway....here's Benny's Brown Ale (you'll know why if you watch the video - which is 4 minutes and 39 secs....far less than last week's marathon)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSnlA3X1AQ8
Grain Bill
4Kg Pale Malt
60g Torrefied Wheat (all the wheat I had - must order loads more from BB and get some Weiss on...)
250g Light Crystal (all the Crystal I had - same issue as above)
150g Chocolate Malt
Hop Schedule
15g Millenium (AUS) Pellet 14.4% AA, 22.7 IBU First Wort (Aussie hop I haven't tried before, and can't find any details on)
20g Bramling Cross Flowers 5.8% AA, 5.7 IBU 15 mins (Never tried these either)
20g Bramling Cross Flowers 5.8% Flame Out 0 IBU
Yeast was Safale S04 - just sprinkled on dry.....forgot to rehydrate, but this has never been a problem with dry yeasts before.
Water treatment - CRS to 20mg/l CaC03, 1 tsp gypsum in mash and boil
Mash Profile: Mash in at 60C, ramp to 66C and hold for 90 mins, ramp to 77C and mash out. Protafloc tab at 15 minutes.
Video is here - and only 4 mins 39 seconds this week (I'm getting the hang of it now.) Sadly, my brewery faces South West, so it's all backlit - you should still get a laugh out of it though.
All went well. Apart from me being stupid and turning the RIMS pump on full as soon as I'd mashed in - which gave me a slow recirc to start with. Sorted itself out in the end though. Another monster efficiency day too - 95% or so...
I ended up with 22L at 1048, vs target of 23L at 1046. Could have diluted it down, but didn't bother.
Seems to be kicking off already. I'm not sure I even like brown ale though....I'm more of a hophound....

Great video! Made me chuckle
Nice brew set up too; makes me realise how much I need to re think my own brew days!

If I had all the money I'd spent on brewing... I'd spend it on brewing!

I think you'll enjoy the Bramling Cross, you get a good earthy Goldings flavour and the Flame-outs will add that bit of Black Currant.
The initial Black Currant will probably die away in keg leaving a pretty wholesome Goldings ale
Excellent vid, if I ever did a vid I'd probably leave the camera set on a tripod in one spot.
Its just missing a large breasted scantily clad Nurse chasing you around

Absolutely hilarious!!
You seem to spend a lot of time with your hands on your hips looking at things!
We must all be rushing around in a similar manner during a brew, so why doesn't all that exercise counteract the effect (on me
) of drinking the results?

That's because I was making a conscious effort not to scratch my arse while looking at things.....befuggled wrote:Absolutely hilarious!!![]()

I said the same thing to the Missus last night...."Look - don't I move around alot while brewing..." She said "don't kid yourself, Fat Boy. It's not excercise unless you move further..."befuggled wrote:We must all be rushing around in a similar manner during a brew, so why doesn't all that exercise counteract the effect (on me) of drinking the results?

Great video!
Sounds like a nice brew, I really like American browns, so would have added more hops :p

I thought long and hard about that.....was going to split the pack of BX and use 50% at 15 mins and 15% at Flame Out. But then I thought I'd try a not very hoppy beer for one in my life....Borodave wrote:Great video!

Awesome video yet again. Really shows how much running about we all do when brewing, even with a nice set up.

I couldn't find this earlier, some eejut with an iPhone played it to me the other day
http://www.brucemcmillan.com/FRB_Puffin ... PuffinPage
click on "Puffin in Iceland" for what I did when I saw the video!
It's a nice page as well. We went to Puffin Island from Pembrokeshire a few years ago. No bludi Puffins...
Saw quite a few seals with pups though

Pembrokeshire is where they call Worthington E Creamflow Real Ale.......
