India (not very) Pale Ale

Post by JammyBStard » Thu Oct 21, 2010 7:45 pm

My first 23L brew in a year and only my second ever all the others have been 10L.
A few firsts too, New boiler, it's the first time I've treated my water , it's the first time I've tried using a HLT to sort of fly sparge and the first time with hole hop and a hop stopper (I'd always used pellets with a hop bag and all the break used to go in the FV).

I wanted to make somthing darker than a standard IPA but with loads of bitterness and a fluffy head:

The new boiler with it's built in chiller.
This designe is a bit of a bugger to clean, but the chiller in the middle gives you somvhere to rest your paddle whenyour not stiring and the space around the outside lets you stir really easily; I'm really chuft with it, it's made from a cheap plastic bucket from Barley Bottom, it got a litle softer in the boil but there was no deformation at all.

Loads of finishing hops!

I hit my 1.060 OG on the nose though the sparge temp was a bit all over the place thanks to a bit of a misshap with the HLT when I ran off to answer the phone!
We'll have to see how fermentible it is!

Seems like a good brew. I have to ask though, what happened to your element? It looks very black!
If I had all the money I'd spent on brewing... I'd spend it on brewing!

It was left on while the tun was draining and I was distracted by a phone call and it drained past the element. There might be a bit of ferrous material in in the finished product; but what dosent kill you........

Did you remove the over-heat cuttoff bimetalic disk from you element?

Tested mine the other day to check they do turn off when run dry and my argos ones worked well.

No the disk is still in there, it had only just dropped past the element when i got to it. A lot of the black is caramalised wort I think.
