Tweaked Turbo Cider.

Post by simco999 » Mon Oct 04, 2010 8:28 pm

I thought I'd do TC with a few additions.

I've got back into homebrewing after 28 years off!! I used to do kits when I was a student. Like everyone else I'm fed up of being ripped off at the pub.

I've done a couple of kits to start but I was interested in doing a TC with a few tweaks.

Ingredients:

18 litres of Apple Juice from Aldi - 56p per litre.
A few apples from my mates garden - free.
A jar of Aldi honey - £2.49
Marmalade - 90p
Muntons Gold Yeast
500g Spray malt. - £2.50ish
3 cups of black tea.
Total: £15ish - 40p a pint.

First I washed the apples. Then I chopped them up and put them in two pans. I didn't use the cores and I left the skin on. Then let them boil for a while to kill any nasties.

Image

I put the honey and marmalade in some hot water to make it easier to pour - probably didn't need to put the marmalade in - so sue me!!!
I added the honey to the apples so it would dissolve.

Image

I missed getting a pic of the apples when they had been boiled for a while. They were still in pieces but about ready to turn to mush.
Chucked them in my sanitised FV. Then added the marmalade and the tea for tannin.

Next the apple juice went in - 17l of Aldi plus 1 litre from Asda - a freebie from my uncle.

Checked the OG at 1055 - then added the spray malt.

I had to wait until it cooled a bit to pitch the yeast.

OG 1060. Get in.

Nice head on it next day.

My mate said that the malt may have been a mistake. What the hell!!!

All comments, and abuse welcome!!!

Interesting addition of malt. I'll be watching to see how it turns out.

Looking forward to how this turns out. Definitely interested in making some TC. I have some Champagne yeast for it. No usage of tea for the tannin I see.

Thanks Capper - yes I did put three cups of black tea in it.

Cheers for reminding me.

I'll edit my OP.

Just bottled this - quite a good taste - very fruity. No honey flavours - made two big mistakes.

I put the honey in when I was boiling the apples. Big mistake - no honey flavour at all.

Also the apple pulp was not needed. It absorbed a lot of the juice. So I only got 19.5 litres from a 23 l run.

Any way its very good drinking out of the FV. I'll wait to see how it matures.

Laters.

Nice foamy white head - probably due to the malt??

Getting the honey through now - nice and fruity taste as well. Will definitely give this a go again.

Looks like a nice pint. Tried honey in one of mine, didn't like it though as I used way too much resulting in it tasting like mead.

So what about the malt did it have an effect?

I think so - it was very smooth with a good head - my latest effort that didn't have malt was very sharp and has a rubbish head - but its conditioning now so we'll see.
