Wet Spaniel Brewery AG No.1

Post by JontyR » Tue Nov 09, 2010 11:27 am

Well, with thanks to the fantastic information resource on Jims' and to all on here who've answered by daft questions, I've managed to get all my gear together and have got AG 1 mashing as I type.

It's Haz66's Golden Pippin recipe as this beer is a particular favourite of mine

Fermentable Colour lb: oz Grams Ratio
Pale Malt 5 EBC 7 lbs. 11.4 oz 3500 grams 89.7%
Wheat Malt 3.5 EBC 0 lbs. 14.0 oz 400 grams 10.3%

Hop Variety Type Alpha Time lb: oz grams Ratio
Cascade Whole 5.5 % 60 mins 0 lbs. 1.4 oz 40 grams 57.1%
Cascade Whole 5.4 % 20 mins 0 lbs. 0.5 oz 15 grams 21.4%
Cascade Whole 5.4 % 10 mins 0 lbs. 0.5 oz 15 grams 21.4%

Final Volume: 23 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.038
Final Gravity: 1.009
Alcohol Content: 3.8% ABV
Total Liquor: 32.2 Litres
Mash Liquor: 9.8 Litres
Mash Efficiency: 75 %
Bitterness: 33.3046182473629 EBU
Colour: 6 EBC

Here's my kit - it ain't pretty but it was cheap!!

I haven't built a stand in my garage yet so I'm afraid it's a heath robinson affair in the utility room at the moment

The mash tun retained 66 degrees so very happy there.

Here's my dodgy sparging device in action

Thanks Monkeyboy

Boil finished - I allowed 25% for evaporation etc and ended up with 24l over my target 23l so I'm pretty pleased with that. I left it to stand for half an hour befor draining and the wort was nice and clear on run off

Here's the filth :D

OG was predicted at 1.038 and I got 1.039 so I'm happy enough with that.

I don't have an IC so it'll be getting left overnight before pitching the yeast tomorrow.

That was bloody good fun!!!

Thats all very impressive - went a smoother than my first trials of new kit, too. Good stuff!!

This has been in the FV for 7 days now, I checked the gravity and it's 1 point off the estimated FG so a few more days should see it. Obviously I had a slurp from the trial jar and oh boy, am I a happy man!! I could quite happily have supped a pint of it. Finfers crossed it looks like it should turn out ok.
