AG#6 Adnams Broadside / owd yer tight

That's a Nottingham saying from our annual Goose Fair, meaning hold on to tight to the ride. I had to chuck AG#5 away due to an infection so I've had to rethink, plan the day and cross my fingers, hold on tight and hope for the best.

Somehow everything's today's gone smoothly and this was the first brewday when I've not felt stressed. I understand the basic processes now so there were no nasty surprises. I've used water treatment for the first time today - CRS and DLS - and everything's OK so far. Measure pH for the first time and it was 5.1 :), reached strike temperature in the mash tun without making any adjustments :) and efficiency was good as the OG is 1.05 rather than 1.045 as indicated in BYOBRA. :D I think it helped that I was mega-organised and prepared.

Spent blooming ages cleaning and sterlising. Still think it was dodgy tap water last time but I'm not taking any risks.

Waiting for Krausen now. It's 8 hours since I pitched the hydrated yeast and nothing yet but it's early days.

:)

Hi,

Glad to hear you had a good brew day! My last AG (#3) went smoothly too - no stress - despite the fact I wanted to get in the FV & pitch the yeast before I my eye test at 11am! Managed it due to being organised - grains hops etc wighed night before and mash/sparge water heated on a timer ready for when I got up at 5am...

Sounds like a good brew.. Although I'm not sure I like broadside as I'm not a fan of Bodacia hops...

Incidently your subline is very much like a old seadog saying that a mate of mine uses (usually in place of dont panic) which is hold fast - meaning hang on stick to the plan/direceted course etc. Apparently in the days of Nelson it was used to mean 'don't shit yourself and fire the broadside too early'... It seems that a successfull tactic against the combined french/spanish fleet was to get amonst 'em and only open fire at about 120-150 yards! (Which is just out of effective musket fire range (stopping the marines on the enemy ships sniping/shooting those on your decksyou are firing from a moving heaving ship) I can only imagine the horror and destruction this caused to an unarmoured wooden ship on the receiving end...

Hopefully your brew will give you the courage to hold fast!

:)

This one's from BYOBRA and has Challenger for bitterness and Fuggles for aroma.

Still holding fast as the fermentation's not started yet. Cue a new thread...

So do Boadicea hops actually exist to buy? I was told that Adnams cultivated them themselves... Any truth in that?

Have you tried them? I'm under the impression that they're nothing like the Adnams hops...
