AG#5

Post by Shippo » Mon Dec 13, 2010 4:57 pm

Finally mashed in for AG#5 - yes, at nearly 4pm (and 9 days late due to frozen water pipes last week). Anyone want to place bets on what time I'll be finished tonight? If it is this side of midnight I'll be quite pleased! This is my last chance to get a brew done for New Year's Eve though, so it has to happen...

Cheers! It's a Ringwood 49er clone, from BYOBRA, so a nice hefty ale for a cold evening seeing in the New Year...

I'm using a pack of Nottingham, more through necessity than anything else - it's all I've got! Used S04 for my first three AGs, and then Nottingham for the last one and now this one too. It seemed to ferment out well, and quickly, on AG#4 and the taste I had when I barrelled it seemed good.

Ok, so mashing and sparging all over, the temperature of the collected wort is creeping up - mid-70s now. The outside temperature is going the other way - 2 degrees and falling... That'll be good when I'm trying to cool it all back down again later, but at the moment it is just slowing things down!

Surprised myself and was all done just after 10pm - good job too, the sub-zero temperatures were freezing up all the patches of water I was spilling over the path...

Bobba - should be barreling it at the weekend, i'll let you know then what the first sample is like. Remind me in the new year and I'll report back on the finished product!

Racked this off yesterday, after 6 days in the FV. Naturally a sample was consumed - it has been a while since I had a "genuine" 49er, so I can't say for sure how close a match it is, but this certainly made a fine bitter. Good rounded body, with a lingering (but not excessive) hop finish. Suffice to say I am looking forward to enjoying several pints of this when it is opened up on New Year's Eve. What didn't fit in the barrel has gone into a second FV for bottling next weekend, so time will tell how long my patience will last with those...
