AG#47 - Bramling Cross IPA

Bramling Cross IPA - I wasn't actually planning to brew today, so I started late after throwing this recipe together. Its serving two functions; 1. I want to smell &taste Blackcurrant in an IPA from the Bramling Cross Hops; 2. It uses up a selection of Hops from the Freezer and pretty much depletes my base malt stocks.
I'd have preferred to have more Bramling Cross in the 80c steep but hopefully it will be adequate to give some of the characteristics I'm after.

Fermentables:
Lager Malt - 50%
Wheat Malt - 35%
Flaked Oats - 10%
Crystal Wheat Malt - 5%

Hops:
WGV @ 60 mins - 35g - (First Wort Hop)
Pilot @ 60 mins - 45g - (First Wort Hop)
First Gold @ 15 mins - 28g
Bramling Cross @ 0 mins - 39g - (80c Steep for 20mins)

Final Volume: 21 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.056
Final Gravity: 1.013
Alcohol Content: 5.6% ABV
Total Liquor: 31.2 Litres
Mash Liquor: 12.3 Litres
Mash Efficiency: 80 %
Bitterness: 68 EBU
Colour: 17 EBC

Mashed at 66c and lost 2c of 60min period, achieving 86% Mash efficiency.
Boiled for 60minutes, old Lager yeast added as nutrient and Protafloc tablet added for the last 20mins.
Yeast is Safale us-05 pitched at 20c, dry sprinkled.

Must be 1054 with a couple of divisions in the meniscus, Refractometer said 14.2 Brix (1055), so about a point lower than Target:

yeah! should turn it into a cracker! I've only used oats in darker beers, I might have to have a go as I've got a few kg of oat malt to use! :D

Sounds bloody good that Ade, i`m gonna have to get another brew on, been ill and busy so not had the chance for a while but

Current OG is 1025-ish, still a fair bit to ferment out, some of the flavour I wanted is starting to come through... fingers crossed :)

Just bottled this, maybe not the full on Blackcurrant I was after... more hops next time!

Hi,

I'm thinking of doing something similar myself...

Mainly Pale malt grist with a little Crystal (to 22EBC) and some wheat to an OG of 1052 plus 8% sugar in the boil

My hops will be BX @ 90 Min with a 10 min addition for a total of 52 IBU's and 28g of Goldings as steep hops...

I'll be interested to see how yours turns out once its matured a little...

I'll probably use Nottingham yeast too

A taste yesterday or the day before show it as being *Way too bloody soon to drink!* though If I do it again I'd get lots of fresh Bramling Cross hops and really load them in at 15mins and Flame-out steep / 80c steep.
I think I lacked enough hops for my desired effect, time will tell, give it a few weeks in the bottle.

I would imagine it is too early with that gravity and IBU level... :)

I was thinking of about 40g of BX at 10 mins, which should give me more than a hint of black currant... My initial thought regarding the Goldings as a steep hop was that they would temper the currant attack and compliment them nicely...

From what I've read it was bred from a variety of 'traditional' Golding and a wild Canadian hop so I'm hoping they will work well together

Taster Bottle: none of the Blackcurrant I was wanting, needs a big heap of nice fresh Bramling Cross hops at flameout.
It is however a good solid Goldings flavour, smooth and rounded, not as bitter as I'd have liked though.
Clear as a bell and good carbonation.
