AG 12 and 13 Double Brew Day Citra and Summit

Post by GrowlingDogBeer » Mon Feb 28, 2011 1:02 pm

I haven't done a brew for a while, what with being away with work and catching up with other jobs so I thought I'd go for a Double Brew day trying out some Single Hop Ales. It didn't quite go as planned.

AG12 Citra Pale Ale 25 Litre

4.475 Kg MO Pale Malt
0.2Kg Torrefied Wheat

10g Citra 60 mins
15g Citra 15 mins
15g Citra 10 mins
15g Citra 5 mins
15g Citra 2 mins
15g Citra 1 mins
15g Citra Flame Out

Water all treated and heated nice and early, Got the Mash On, weighed out the hops and all organised.
I have decided to sell my wifes car, so at this point it looked like it was going to be a nice day so I decided I could clean the car whilst I was brewing, I brew in the garage so it's quite practical.
Thinking I'm all prepared and ready for to go when the Mash is done I set to and start washng the car, all is going well.

Mash finished, back into the garage to start the run off into the boiler and get the sparge underway, FWH and chemicals added to boiler, leaving it to do its thing for a while as I carry on cleaning the car.

As soon as the Sparge is finished I start refilling the HLT for the next brew and cleaning out the Mash Tun, concentrating on washing the Mash Tun I completely miss the Hot Break and wort and hops flying out of the boiler all over the garage floor. I eventually get the boiler back under control and continue the boil adding hops as necessary. Boil over, Chiller in, job done. Even the car is looking all clean and shiny.

Put the Mash on for the next Brew

AG13 Summit Pale Ale

4.475 Kg MO Pale Malt
0.2Kg Torrefied Wheat

10g Summit 60 mins
15g Summit 15 mins
15g Summit 10 mins
15g Summit 5 mins
15g Summit 2 mins
15g Summit 1 mins
15g Summit Flame Out

As you will notice this is an identical recipe to the Citra with identical Hop Schedule, just a different Hop.
After a quick roast Dinner it was time to run off the First Brew into the FV, Whats going on here? Its not running at all well, the tap appears blocked, I poke it a bit from the outside with a skewer and it appears a Hop leaf was stuck, oh well its clear now problem overted. Stuck again..... Its at this point I notice the Hop Stopper sitting on the draining board.
Drastic measures, pour the entire contents of the boiler into the FV, the yeast already being in the FV. Sanitise hop stopper, put it in the boiler, pour everything back into the boiler to settle for a while.
An hour later try again, run off the Wort into the FV, much better this time round.

After a quick rinse of the boiler time to get the next brew in there, Hop Stopper firmly in place this time. An extended Mash, about 2.5 hours but only dropped 1 degree so happy with my insulation.

The second brew went smoothly as the car was already clean and photographed ready for AutoTrader so no distractions this time.

Lesson learnt, trying to do 2 brews and clean a car at the same time doesn't work too well. I do have 50 Litres of Beer bubbling away though :)

Sounds stressful. Could have been worse though - at least you ended up with beer :) Is there any reason you don't put leave the hop stopper in the HLT/boiler all the time? I've forgotten to put mine in a couple of times (luckily before the boil), and I'm going to try avoiding any further forgettages by leaving it in all the time. I just made up that word by the way; I'm quite surprised it didn't exist already.

I take it out when cleaning the boiler as it makes it easier, just forgot to put it back in again.

Lesson for future, replace hop stopper as soon as finished cleaning boiler.

Great experiment, hope you get a good price on the car!

I've forgotten to replace the hop strainer at least half a dozen times, happens to us all.

Have you had loads of annoying bastards ringing you up saying they have got people lined up to buy your car? Oh, but you have to give them some money first.

No, but I was expecting it after the last car I sold.

I have had 3 genuine people call so far though, 1 has viewed already and apparantly will call back when they have the money tomorrow, I am sceptical

Another guy is coming in the morning at 9am, he sounds very keen :)

First to part with cash in my direction gets the car.

Have we gone off topic?? Oh it's OK it's my thread anyway :)
