There may be a slight additional bitterness, but I'm not sure you would notice it. Sometimes I let the wort stand in the boiler with the flameout hops for an hour, sometimes I chill to 80C and let it stand, sometimes i add the flameout hops and chill instantly and i don't notice a difference in bitterness whichever method I use. I wouldn't worry about it.

cheers nick, thats reassuring. I came across a link you posted to an amerikan article on late hopping and getting most of the bitterness from late additions which I fancy trying - only I don't want to overshoot on bitterness. It sounds as if I'll be ok. Anyway I've located some lower AA cascade and I'll give The Rev Shanes Cha sorry Bisghops Farewell another crack first but 100% FWH and a big addition of cascade at the end.

100g Cascade flameout (includes 20g of my first Cascade home grown 2010 crop)
Interesting little twist there with the homegrown! How do UK grown Cascades turn out smell wise etc?
2 x WLP 001 in a 4 litre starter
That ought to get the job done, this is the first time ive used 001, but my 1L starter into 25L flew out of the blocks!

I just chucked mine straight in, no starter as advised and it took off no problem and has built a nice tight head

This is for 46 litres though :D

The home grown Cascade smell more like Citra that Cascade...............we'll have to wait and see.

46L of BF!! Lucky man.

I held my starter volume back because the wort i had stored for culturing was dark, and i didn't want to add too much colour. I decanted some liquid off when the yeast had settled out as well, for same reason. Would normally have done a 2L starter and kept some back for the next brew(s).

I had foam coming out through the airlock and everywhere yesterday, violent stuff. Don't get that with S-05.

Gonna have to change the yeast method. No starter because my yeast hasn't arrived in time (ordered it late) so 2 vials going straight in :!:

on the subject of extreamly hoppy beers I was drinking Harvistouns Black watch in the Mitre off hatton garden last night. Hugely hoppy and very fine - for those who like it hoppy try it if you see it

How long does WLP001 take to work? I'm 10 days and counting! Gravity was 1010 after 8 days but I still had a decent covering of yeast on the surface, I skimmed and let the residue go into solution and the head has reformed and at this rate I'll be bringing it along in the bucket for tasting. Is this unusual?

This is a fairly slow yeast and it ferments at higher temps (20-23C) so if your temp is low it will take longer. The thick head (krausen) is normal for this yeast, I either skim it off or chill the FV and it drops to the bottom. I suspect your temp may be a bit low, but 1.010 is good. If you started at the right original gravity (i think 1.046 ish from memory) you should be around the right ABV, so i would bottle it but if you suspect the yeast is still working, use very little priming sugar. Alternatively; check your gravity again tomorrow and if it's not dropped any more, it's ready. If you don't have a fermenting fridge, put the FV outside overnight to chill and the thick head will drop out. Make sure you bottle/keg before it warms up again though.

I love the concept of a fermenting fridge, but I got into so much trouble over the virgins I needed for the sparging that the wife won't stand for a brewing fridge. I shall do it the natural way!
I am glad to know that this is normal for the yeast though. I'm brewing batch 2 tomorrow, so much fun am I having and that will be temperature controlled - ice for crash cooling and then I'll stand the bucket in the fridge. I'm starting to take this far too seriously, I shall go lie down in a darkened room for a while.....

Pump makes life easier, as does having a mash tun that drains properly.

Recirculation, looks quite pale. I was almost tempted to bung in some brown malt but I restrained myself.

The Cascades that Rob sent looked beautiful, as soon as I dropped them in they turned back in to lovely big green cones and smelt great. The picture doesn't really do it justice.

Missed the gravity a bit in the end, ended up at 1043 I think this is mostly down to inaccurate volume measurement on my part.

Also didn't make a starter as I'd run out of time so just chucked the yeast in, seems to have taken off pretty well though.

I've spent the last 2 days working - at least I got to miss the wedding!#

I'm going to try to resurrect my Nelson Sauvin brew which has no aroma at all by a judicious injection of hop tea and will see if my no 2 brew for bishs farewell is ready for bottling - the wife wants the sink back where its been sitting keeping cool.
