I just made my 2nd AG & decided on this recipe for a brown ale after some careful consideration & good advice :-
5 gallon brew
3750g pale malt
350g crystal malt
100g chocolate malt
45g fuggles
nottingham yeast
SG. 1045 (bit less than the 1048 expected)
used the batch sparge method which seems to work ok for me
fuggles in for 60 min boil
ebc 27.7
ibu 23.9
est ABV 4.6%
everything went smoothly & i managed to calculate the mash water better this time , just have to keep honing my system but very happy with the AG method .only used kits before with half decent results but now i am glad i invested in the equipment & i am sure it will pay dividends in the long run with great beers.

Re: Brown Ale
AG is a lot easier than it might first look. Just take a bit of time from start to finish, but its well worth the effort.
Hope the beers are turning out good, maybe add some late hops for a 20-30min Steep at the end of the boil.

Re: Brown Ale
thanks mate & yes I do take time usually about 6 hours with sterilising at start & cleaning up at the end but very enjoyable brew days.
my 1st AG brew should be ready in 4 weeks & was supposed to be a lager type but probably finish more like a light ale which isnt a problem.
will try the late hops in future recipes as I see it in alot of recipes, so just understanding the characteristics & flavours so I can get better use & results.
perhaps a nice bitter next to make my brown over bitter tipple

Re: Brown Ale
Well done on getting your second brew under your belt! I'm on AG#7 now and it get's easier with every brew, but no less enjoyable.
I'm doing a brown ale next but have some amber malt that needs using up so i'm going to try 4kg MO, 500g Crystal and 300g Amber, Magnum to about 40 IBUs possibly with some late Fuggle. This style should have a subtle hop character with the darker malts providing the primary flavours, so i'm not sure about doing the late/post boil hopping unless you want a particularly hoppy brown ale.

Re: Brown Ale
thanks rick , the late / post boil hopping i referred to was for other brews that might benefit , as for the above brown ale i brewed it was just 60 min boil hopping.
the amber will be fine as the chcolate i used was very strong in flavour , so only dared use the 100g but from pre barrel tasting it has got a full bodied brown ale taste which is what I was after.
getting very addictive this homebrew AG method , as for the recipe software , well i could spend hours trying to design a great brew
