Fuggles English Pale

Post by Birdman » Wed Aug 03, 2011 10:37 pm

Brewed this quickly last night. First time I've really brewed a "traditional" style bitter / golden ale. My dad is visiting in a few weeks and hoping for a quick turn around to get it on keg when he arrives. No pics as I was in a rush to get finished...

Fuggles EPA

Original Gravity (OG): 1.044 (°P): 11.0
Colour (SRM): 13.5 (EBC): 26.6
Bitterness (IBU): 64.8 (Average). But likely to be a lot less as using previously used dry hops for bittering addition...

89.01% Maris Otter Malt (4.25kg)
5.76% Caramalt (275g)
5.24% Torrified Wheat (250g)

25g Amarillo whole leaf (7% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes (First Wort) - Dry Hops from my last APA
25g Centennial whole leaf (7% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes (First Wort) - Dry Hops from my last APA
40g Fuggles pellets (5% Alpha) @ 10 Minutes (Boil)
40g Fuggles pellets (5% Alpha) @ 0 Minutes (Aroma)

Protofloc Tablet @ 15 Minutes (Boil)

Single step Infusion at 71°C for 60 Minutes. Boil for 60 Minutes

Fermented at 24°C with WLP001

Notes: Brewday 02/08/11

Quick and easy "bitter" for Dads visit. Mashed high to try and stop this getting too dried out as hot weather this week.

Ended up with 21L @ 1.043 (according to new refractometer). Pitched ~200ml of WLP001 slurry to the fermentor at ambient (24oC :( as a hot week).

24 hrs in. Fermenting quickly (25 bubbles per minute). Still 24oC in fermentation room.

Cheers mate...

I just watched Michael Jacksons beerhunter all the way through for the first time. Wow. I'm so disappointed with myself for not seeing this earlier. Jackson was pioneering all of the things I believe in now (US beers etc) 22 years ago when this was first filmed...

Unbelievable. Pisses me off even more that 22 years later we are still so entrenched with what is "good" and "bad". "real" and keg etc...

Truly inspiring to watch all 6 episodes on the bounce. What a legend. Wish he was still around. Wouldnt have all the wishy washy opinion wankers like protz et al then.

Sorry for the rant, but had a couple and feeling frustrated.

Anyway, I agree pdtnc. I'm not the greatest fan of traditional english bitters, but I really do love fuggles hops. Im not the biggest fan of Goldings (and Im guessing thats a taste thing on my part), but I do love me some Fuggles...

Challenger / Northdown has to be the best for me, I think Bramling Cross has the best Goldings flavour.
I seem to always hide my Fuggles & Goldings in Stouts etc
