First All Grain

Post by markbatten » Mon Jul 09, 2007 7:09 pm

On friday night I attempted my first all grain. I have put the photos on a blog rather than try to get them on here.
It was a great experience and was even helped out by my wife.
There are lots of pictures missing as I got caught up in the whole process.
I mucked up a bit miscalculating losses and ended up a bit short so I expect that it is a little overhopped.
Oh and my efficiency was a bit below the recipe.
At least I have got something to work off now.

The pictures on the blog look good mb 8)
Now you've got your first full size AG under your belt it all gets a lot easier :)
You know the little mistakes that you made and you can correct them next time 8)

Well done Mark, you've done better than me - my first all grain ended up down the sink (see post about wrong temperature)

I liked the blog - tell me though (I don't think I've read up enough yet), what is the efficiency and how do you calculate it?

The efficiency is the actual amount of extract you get from the grain. Using a spreadsheet /beer data programme/maths you can work out what the 100% yeild of a weight of grain will give you.
You then put in a number for your systems efficiency ,say 75%, and the programme/maths will tell you what extract you should actually achieve.
So for example a 100% yeild from a grain bill could be 58.7 degrees of gravity.
An efficiency of 75% will give you an actual extract of 44 degrees of gravity.
My actual efficiency was less than my estimated so I only acheived 41 degrees of gravity thus I am working at 70% efficiency.
Thats if I have worked it out right!
I hope this helps.

Thanks for that. I think I've still got a long way to go to get my head around many of these numbers :?

Great work with the brew & the blog Mark, both very impressive =D>

I was (and still am) surprised by the losses to the boil & the hops, I had 30 litres pre-boil today & ended up with about 21 in the FV :o

Good luck with the next one - there's no turning back :D
