AG#6 – Copp’er Hold – Amercian Amber Ale / Red Ale (BIAB)

Post by windrider » Wed Jul 22, 2015 2:13 pm

Fancied making a not so hop driven session beer, that could be enjoyed by friends who don’t love lots of hops (what’s wrong with them!). So I came up with the recipe below and brewed this at the beginning of June.

I’ve cracked a few bottles of this over the last couple of weeks and I’m pleased with it. When I brew this again I’m going to make some tweaks to the malt profile as I thought it was lacking body and tasted a bit thin (perhaps more Carared to add more body?). First time using my new mini kegs and I will be opening these this weekend at a friend’s party. I under primed the bottles a tad so these aren’t as lively as I was hoping they would be.

I’m pleased with the colour of the beer and the red hue is definitely there in the right light.

Overview
Brewer: windrider
Style: American Amber Ale
ABV: 5% (
Original Gravity (OG): 1.050
IBU's (Tinseth): 40

10% CaraRed Malt (45 EBC = 22.8 SRM) 562 grams = 1.24 pounds
10% Crystal Malt (150 EBC = 76.1 SRM) 562 grams = 1.24 pounds
1.2% Roast Barley (1300 EBC = 659.9 SRM) 70 grams = 0.15 pounds
The Hop Bill
23.7 IBU Centennial Flowers (11.2%AA) 25.7 grams = 0.906 ounces at 60 mins
8.3 IBU Cascade Flowers (9%AA) 30.8 grams = 1.088 ounces at 10 mins
0 IBU Cascade Flowers (9%AA) 30.8 grams = 1.088 ounces at 0 mins
Yeast
WLP001 California Ale Yeast for 14 days at 20 C = 68 F

Obligatory grain shot:

Pretty full mash:

Doesn’t seem like enough hops:

New mini kegs, can’t wait to open one or two of these:

Hard to get a picture of the red hue, but reasonably pleased with the outcome:

Looks a great colour. 10% each of crystal and carared is already quite a lot, maybe you just need to mash a few degrees higher to get the body?

I use the brewferm minikegs myself, they're great for parties.

Good point...when i do another batch of this i'll try mashing a few degrees higher. Loved the flavour the roasted barley gives.

Hoping the minikegs will travel okay to my friends house. They are currently sitting in the fridge.

No not yet sadly I don't have a brew fridge so worried ill end up with a banana beer.
Also still trying to decide what I want to brew, want something that's
a)cheap to brew as it's my first go round
B) something that also tastes good

Think I've settled on kinda doing a tetley s cask beer but with challenger instead of the main bittering hop
