AG#06 (FourBrewFeb) - Greg Hughes' Nelson Sauvin Single Hop

Post by cerbera84 » Fri Feb 05, 2016 3:59 pm

Hi guys,

Aiming to do four brews this month, starting with this one.

Recipe (30L batch)

Pale malt (MO Warminster) 6205g
Carapils 250g
Nelson Sauvin 29g start of boil
Nelson Sauvin 14g + 5g Irish Moss 15mins
Nelson Sauvin 14g 5mins
Nelson Sauvin 43g steeped at 80degrees

Pretty straightforward brewday - used my new electric HLT (viewtopic.php?f=6&t=74850) so turned on at 7:15am, up to 77 degrees by 8.45am. Not too bad for 47 litres in an uninsulated pot.

Had a nightmare with my PT100, packed up (maybe due to steam, was dangling in the HLT?) Also I really need a thermometer, had to use the meat one from the kitchen. Thinking of replacing the dial thermometers on all pots, cannot get them reading right. Vorlaufed for the longest time ever (10mins ;-) didn't run clear)

Haven't tried this hop yet so looking forward to it. Also first attempt at fly sparging today, wasn't too difficult. Still haven't fully sorted out levels in boiler so finishing up with 30L is a guestimate.

Had 1.032 pre-boil (at 60 degrees) went to about 1.040 once cooled. Boiled for 70mins, ended up at 1.050 once cooled (WHICH MEANS I HAVE HIT MY NUMBERS GRAVITY-WISE FOR THE FIRST TIME!!!) well chuffed! also new hop filter worked an absolute charm!!

Sprinkled on Safale 05 once I had lifted fermenter into keezer (trying using keezer + heater for fermentation, won't be doing so again, lifting 30L into that damn thing was difficult!!)

My favourite hop...

& I think it's a pretty simple proposition - if you like sauvignon blanc wine you'll love Nelson Sauvin hops.

If you're not so sure about sauvignon blanc then...

quick update - just checked on this beer, down to 1.010/12 now so crash cooling to 3 degrees ahead of bottling on Saturday. Sample tastes great and reminded me of one of my favourites, Oakham Citra, lovely citrus/gooseberry flavour - very happy with this one so far

my god - this hop is lovely - kegged into King Keg TT on Saturday, had a pint tonight - beautiful! I've even come around to the idea of using the King Kegs again (even got given a free one at Christmas from my Auntie and Uncle that they used to use) which means I have two KKTT and two cornys

Looks very good. Love that hop also. My best ale yet was my single hopped nelson. 3 bottles left. Need to make it again.
