AG#2 Disaster Cascade IPA

Post by Secla » Tue Feb 23, 2016 12:24 am

So finally got time to do ag #2 and it was a bit of a disaster all round.

Recipe was along the lines of:
4kg Marris otter
1kg munich
250g carapils

30g chinook 60 mins
20g cascade 10 mins
20g cascade 5 mins
20g cascade steep

I used bottled water this brew as i had a strange astringency in ag#1 and i just wanted to rule my water out for this one

What went wrong then, Well firstly my kettle leaked as i forgot to tighten the lock nut for the element
Then my plate chiller only got me down to 25 degrees(think im going to have to recirculate on the next brew) The fermenting fridge then blew up, so i ended up just pitching the yeast while i set up my other redundant fermenting fridge.
So about an hour later I got it in and it was pretty hot so thought i had killed any chance of fermentation, But today things seem to have started...... well just have to wait and see what happens

I was going to dry hop with more cascade but think im not sure i`l bother as it could be destined for the drain.

No pictures on this one :(
Came out with about 20l at 1.053, Gravitys about right but should have been around 23l, probably lost a 1l leaking, may have to allow a bit more for boiler/mashtun dead space

Looks like a nice recipe. If it were my brew I'd take a gravity reading after a week. Taste the sample and if it tastes ok, go ahead with a dry hop. I think it should be okay at 25C. Might be a tad estery depending on yeast used. What yeast did you pitch?
